Whenever Kasey tried to kill herself, the guardian paused her long enough for someone to find and help her. When someone else managed to do the same, the guardian had no authority over it, though it tried. Ulitmately, it's a metaphor.

this is really nice. Very sad and poignant, but all the better for it. I must say, though, that I had to read your explanation on someone else's comment to help me understand though.

It's like the saying "never run faster than your guardian angel can fly".
