Yeah, it's getting to be about that time again. Those of you who've been around for awhile, feel free to ignore this. Newbies and potential newbies, pay attention.
It can be a bit ... intimidating? Overflowing with squealing pre-teens? But hey, I'm 'married' to three fairly sane (as sane as me, anyway) Gackt fans and the regulars at Seki are all relatively sane as well.
...still, compared to the masses, that's not a very big number of people.... >_>
Okay, this is not to sound rude or anything. It really isn't . . . but really, since when have you really needed a beta? From what I've read of your earlier stuff (and from the stuff we used to work on together), you were (and still are) quite an accomplished writer. Yes, I understand that keeping people IC is really important (and I really know nothing about the J-Rock fandom at this moment in time -- no, I'm not going to rush out and buy a J-Rock CD. Haven't got the time, the money, or the fuel for my car to do so) but you've always been very good at that. You were always one of my favourite authors. So I ask . . . since when have you really needed a beta? You are that good.
Even pros need editors. ~_^ But like I noted, I don't submit fic to beta for spelling/grammar - though we run for that, too, particularly when I'm in a time crunch and can't get the separation I need to keep from reading what I meant to type instead of what's there - but for characterization and keeping in the realm of believability. Is this finished, does that make sense, did that scene flow right? Did I leave out scenery/description? Am I breaking the laws of physics ... or someone's back? Particularly with RPS where respect is such an issue, it's good to have someone who can come back and say "well, okay, this is a good idea, but Ken would never say it like that. How about this?" or "This part here is utter rubbish - they would never do that" or "Do you know you've changed Shinya's hair color five times in two scenes?" or "Nice, but he was in Korea and they were in LA at the time. Wanna try that again?" or what have you. Which is why I keep betas that are as obsessive researchers as I am.
I don't, either. I really don't let anyone whom I send a chapter or fic to (which is a bit of a rare occasion most of the time) butcher my style. (A friend of mine has had that happen to her. A mutual friend of ours offered to beta for her and the person couldn't comprehend personal style.) My style is my style. I have all of my commas, periods, whatever where I want them. If I'm missing a word or have a word misspelled, it's one thing. Otherwise, when I ask someone for an opinion, it's usually for content.
However, I don't like having a beta. Not an official one, anyways. I'm rather stubborn about that. :)
btw, send me an IM please. I'm online right now on AIM (lianabluestar1), Yahoo! (liana_bluestar) and MSN (liana_bluestar@yahoo.com). I really would love to talk with you again (and please ignore the blank email. That wasn't supposed to go out like that. I was trying to check my mail. Damn mouse. :P)
Read some of your fics on FF.Net (ya...I'm terribly slow...) Seams like your an interesting person (plus the fic. I won't tell you wich one so you won't decide to never touch it again....Not that I'm asking for an update but anyway...) I'm friending this lj. Hope you don't mind.
Well, I found one of your fics wandering around the net, and happened to find that it was a really good read. Kinda dark and depressing, but hey, that came with the warnings, so it was expected.
Mostly, I'm just commenting here to find out where I should check for updates to the Shades of Grey arc you have posted on Yumeji...would updates to that fic be posted here? Because I haven't found the first part, which you have there, either here or skyehawk.com.
Err...well, I'll friend this journal, and if updates will be posted here as they come, feel free to ignore me. If not, mind pointing me in the right direction? Or not. Whichever. Your perogative.
All my fanfiction gets posted out to comms, but I'm in the middle of an experiment (yet again) and posting daily on what I've been writing lately.
Shades of Grey arc suffered from two problems: one, the canon changed while Rain and I were writing and two, the Furuba fandom's been a bit abusive, so I haven't been all that eager to get back into writing it and she's been too busy to write much of anything anyway. ^^'' That and she's been taken hostage by Harry Potter fic. XD;;
I see, I see - thanks for the input! It's good to know what's going on. :)
Well, it's all good even if you don't get back into it. I have noticed a whole truckload of...well, poorly executed Fruits Basket fics, so I wouldn't blame you for being discouraged from the fandom. It suffers a lot, both from canon changes and fandom woes.
Although I will cheer for the HP fics. ^^; Another one of the fandoms I read fic in! Yays!
