Generally speaking, and disregarding what my own is turning out to be, werewolf packs behave like our natural counterparts. Most are either family lines or forced sires (bite victims). These types demand subservience and survival of the group above the individual. Ours is...strange to say the least, more on that later.
The alpha pair is that who exercise the most power over the pack but not always. They are meant to breed and keep the pack alive through their decisions and strategies. In some cases, the ruling is absolute and there is no turning back for obvious reasons. That doesn't mean there's no democracy involved before the choice is made as other can pitch in when they can. Joseph and Nolan are the de-facto alpha pair in our pack, the Strays and it's strangely fitting. They complement each other: Joey's the just strategist alpha while Nolan's the kinder and caregiver of the two. I see ours thriving without the use of intimidation, a welcome reprieve for some of the newer recruits.
The beta members are divided into two categories: lieutenant and sergeants. Lieutenants are the wolves closest to the alphas and are the most trusted. They advice the alphas and, in a sense, lead the rest in case they are indisposed at the moment. In our group, Vincent and Daniel perform these duties and once more, the two are fit to do so: Vin was a former hunter and knows more about other supes than most of us while Danny has a near-photographic memory of every pack and location.
Sergeants, my own positions still maintain the beta rank but they are more strategy or human relations. Joe hates anyone being subservient, having been so for so long, and he has delegated that rank to me and Miss Lanessa. In our brief hunting trip, Lanessa proved to be a good partner and she seems sociable enough that she'd welcome more. I'd more of a strategist myself, keeping us out of trouble whenever it arises...and it does.
Now as to why our pack is different than the ones I've observed. Nolan and Joey have this "All Strays Welcome" policy at hand and what that means is that no matter who you are or where you came, we'll allow it. All of us have different circumstances as to what we are: some of us are born with it, some of us are turned but we turn a blind eye to it. Unlike others, we don't care about your lineage or who you belonged to before: we offer you a safe haven. I frankly like it; never been one to fit in back in Edinburgh or the motherland for that matter. I'm willing to work for it, keep up the appearances over at the firm...maybe hopping the pond wasn't such a bad idea.
