Its a fantastic game.
The ship-based combat is a little lacking, but the other factors of the game are amazing.
My advice: learn the economy system backwards and forwards. Then start making things that people will need. Stuff like barrels for wine, wood planks for shipbuilding (actually anything for shipbuilding) and pace yourself.
The faster you can get stuff to the auction houses the better. Especially early on in the game. Once the game is out for a while, things will be different.
And all those lovely, glorious, sexy ass sailing ships to sail and sink. It was a real joy to be a part of it.
