“Hi. My name’s Bang Chulyong. Your hair looks like a duck’s rear end.”

The boy's hair is dyed a bright shade of orange and he’s got on strawberry-printed pajamas when they first meet. Seungho’s eyes immediately go wide and he looks over from where he’s standing with their to-be-manager, cocking an eyebrow at the smiling boy.

“I’m Yang Seungho and that’s not a very nice thing to say to someone older than you. Especially on the first meeting.”

The boy shrugs nonchalantly. “It’s not so bad, I’m sure when we become idols you can get the stylist to do something about your hair.”

Seungho and their manager just stare after him as he flashes him a toothy grin and walks over to the rest of the members.

“That one’s going to be a handful, you can tell,” the manager laughs. “He’s come up straight from Jangseong.”

“How did he even make it through auditions?” Seungho wonders out loud, still staring at the boy who was now making the other members break into hysterical laughter at his antics.

“He didn’t,” the manager replied. “He’s got family in the industry.”

High rise, beat of the avenue
Bright eyes and subtle variations of blue

A month after their debut, a shout resonates through the dorm. Seungho’s stomping about the place looking for Mir while the rest of the members are either sleeping or watching TV.

“Bang Chulyong, get here right now!” Seungho shouts from the kitchen.

“What did you do?” Chundoong who’s watching TV asks Mir.

“I don’t know,” Mir shrugs. “Must be his time of the month or something. I didn’t do anything this time.”

“Unlikely. Seungho only uses that tone when he’s really mad. You’re in for it.”

Seungho comes tramping into the living room and stares at Mir.

“I bought myself those noodles for lunch today.”

Mir tilts his head upwards and smiles sweetly at MBLAQ’s leader who has a very intimidating look in his eyes.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Hyung.”

“The noodles. They aren’t in the fridge.”

“Are you accusing me of eating them?” Mir retorts, an expression of mock hurt on his face.

Seungho glares at him so hard, Chundoong switches the TV off and walks out of the room. Mir sighs.

“I’ll buy you lunch?”

“Don’t ask, like you have a choice.”

Make haste, I feel your heartbeat
With new taste for speed, out on the street
Find a road to a humble abode where both of our routes meet

Sometimes it’s the way Mir trips into Seungho’s way and offers an apologetic smile up at him, enveloping him in a tight hug and then running off to do whatever he has to. Sometimes it’s the way Seungho feels like everything Mir does is comical and he can never be taken seriously, but then he stumbles upon him staring out through the window, watching the cold rain with this faraway look in his eyes.

Sometimes it’s the way he chases Mir into the living room after he finds out Mir’s eaten his noodles yet again and they collapse into a heap on the sofa, Mir laughing his loud, stupid laugh into Seungho’s ear and burying his face into the crook of the older boy’s neck. Sometimes it’s the way Mir crawls into Seungho’s bed at night and curls against his side like a neglected kitten, and he won’t let Seungho sleep but will keep pestering him with questions, how was your day; did you eat something sweet after dinner, I can smell it on your breath; why are you laughing, I swear I did that when I was in school; do you think Joon hyung has a girlfriend yet.

The last question always strikes Seungho as odd, because it’s a constant whenever the boy decides it was time he needed to keep the leader up all night. But it’s these small moments they have together where Seungho finds he can relax completely and forget about the crazy issues he has to face everyday. Even if it’s just for a while, it’s Mir and the way he has stars in his eyes and the way he can magically make Seungho feel like everything will be fine.

The silver sound is all around and the colors fall like snow
The feeling of letting go, I guess we'll never know

******

One day Seungho walks in on him crying and his heart aches.

“Chulyong,” Seungho walks into the bedroom, startling Mir.

“Ah, Hyung, what’s up?” Mir plasters a smile on his face, his voice laced in honey, trying to discreetly wipe his eyes.

“Chulyong,” Seungho says softly, shutting the door behind him and going over to sit on the bed next to the boy. “What’s wrong?”

Mir is silent for a while, staring at Seungho.

“I really don’t want to tell you, but I know you won’t let it go until I do,” Mir says quietly, his smile dropping to a sadder one.

Seungho feels his nerves tense up, and he reaches out to card his hand through Mir’s hair.

“You know you can tell me,” Seungho smiles gently. “You can trust me.”

“I know I can,” Mir smiles fondly, holding Seungho’s hand and pressing it. “I just. I don’t want you to worry so much about it.”

“Mir,” Seungho says seriously, holding the younger’s face in his hands and wiping away saltwater tear trails. “I don’t know how to tell you this, but I adore you. Please let me know what’s wrong.”

That night, Mir cries himself to sleep in Seungho’s arms after telling him about how he’s fallen for Joon and it was wrong and it hurts and he could get into so much trouble if anyone ever found out and that could jeopardize his entire future and everything he’s worked for and pleasedon’ttellanyoneaboutthis, hyung.

Seungho’s never been good with words, so he doesn’t say anything, just rocks him gently and whispers comfort into Mir’s ear.

Cheer up and dry your damp eyes and tell me when it rains
And I'll blend up that rainbow above you and shoot it through your veins

******

A month later and Mir’s eyes are red and puffy from crying all night. When morning comes around, he rolls out of bed in a terrible mood. Sometimes, when it gets too much to handle, he walks into Seungho’s room and squeezes under his blanket with him, listening to the dull roar of thunder high up in the sky.

Your nerves gather with the altitude
Exhale the stress so you don't come unglued

******

It’s how Seungho presses their foreheads together and lets him know that he’s there, he’s with him, he’s family. It’s how Seungho smiles so wide at him, he feels like his face might split into two, and Mir can’t help but smile back, because they share a secret and they’ve shared countless nights together and forged a bond stronger than blood or bone. It’s how Seungho presses a bit of confidence into Mir every time he squeezes his shoulder reassuringly and how he kisses Mir’s nose affectionately.

Mir finds himself getting better.

We were the crashing whitecaps
On the ocean

******

“Happy Valentine’s Day, hyung,” Mir says, running up to Seungho as they’re getting ready to leave the dressing room for their performance that night. “Sorry, I couldn’t give this to you earlier, haha.”

Seungho looks surprised at the box of chocolates. “You should go get a girlfriend, seriously.”

“Soon enough,” Mir grins. “Until then, these are for you.”

Seungho resists introducing his face to his palm, and takes the chocolates, ruffling the maknae’s hair.

Your heart has a lack of color and we should've known
That we'd grow up sooner or later
'Cause we wasted all our free time alone

******

It’s the way Mir stirs something fraternal in Seungho’s heart and it’s the way Seungho’s always been the sky Mir could collapse into. Each knows how much the other means to him, they’ve never really needed words.

Dear pacific day, won't you take me away?
