I just found out that there's a gym in Oregon that is powered entirely by the use of the cardio machines. So basically, if you want to watch TV from the exercise bike, you have to pedal so the TV gets power

Yeah we were thinking along those lines too - the machines already tell you your watts produced......I expect that there would have to be power to the facility in other areas (and lights), so there is electricity running to the location anyway.
Well yeah it would run in the same fashion as solar cells on the roof. In that when it's collecting solar energy your energy meter actually moves backwards, so you're basically being credited the energy you've saved by the electric company. So instead of paying probably upwards of one grand per month (depending on how big the place is) you'd probably pay a quarter to even half that -- of course depending on how much sun the cells actually get.
So to go all out we could also get solar panels installed on the roof to be even greener and save even more money, but the solar panels themselves are thousands of dollars each. However I hear they're a solid investment if you plan on using the facility for more than 5 years, which optimistically would be worth it.
Well yeah the machines themselves are powered by the person using it, so it complains when it's not getting power to show the LCD screen. I'm talking about powering the TV in front of you, or even the lights. Just some way of utilizing the power in the same way that solar panels would.
