I'll be interested to see where, if anywhere, this goes from here ( Read more... )

I'm assuming this is from my list, since I added Fugazi....now would you have still dropped the Beatles if I left Fleetwood Mac on there? :)

Earlier incarnations of this included the Rolling Stones, who I think are among the most overrated, and also the Beach Boys, whose fetishization by indie popsters I will NEVER figure out.

Dunno, really. I can say that it would've probably taken me days to make that decision, though. And yes, I ran with your list, since it was the first of these I've seen.

Well, I tend to think of the Stones as two different bands, pre- and post-Dirty Work, which roughly translates to the first twenty years and the second twenty. Stones v1.00 were slightly overrated but still good, in my estimation, and v2.00 are/were pretty much shite, with a few good songs peeking out from the mountain of crapularity. So, I agree... sorta.

As for the Indie Beach Boys Revival, I'm guessing it's just the overwhelming need to be ironic at all times, and how can you get more ironic than fawning all over such a well-known but awful

I would do this if I had stronger feelings about the bands in question. Sadly, I don't have a wide enough command of their oeuvres to know if I couldn't live without them. Particularly I need a more substantial knowledge of The Replacements, X, Pixies, and Fugazi (of whom I've never heard). Song suggestions?

Replacements: "Can't Hardly Wait" (Yes, it appears in the movie of the same name, but I recommend trying the Tim version first. It shall be labeled as such wherever you download it, whereas the standard version appeared on Pleased to Meet Me.); "Talent Show"; "Someone Take the Wheel"; "Here Comes a Regular"; "Bastards of Young"; "The Ledge"; "Answering Machine"; "Tommy Hates Music"; "Otto"; "All He Wants to Do Is Fish"; and "Customer". It's really hard for me to narrow down the essential 'mats any more than that.

X: "4th of July". That's probably the most readily accessible jumping-off point. I honestly don't think you'd like 'em, but I could be wrong.

Pixies: "Where Is My Mind"; "Monkey Gone to Heaven"; "Here Comes Your Man"

Fugazi: "Caustic Acrostic"; "Give Me the Cure"; "Sieve-fisted Find".

I've heard a cover of "Crystal Ship" by X, and I liked it, but that might have been the song rather than the group. I'll look for the rest. Thanks!

"Why drop the Beatles, I'm sure most of you are asking. Simple: they're the most overrated, overhyped act in music history. 90% of their catalogue (and I've been exposed to ALL of it) is just fluff with nothing interesting going on, and little of it was done well enough to be deemed guilty pleasures."
