...Writer's block has gotten the best of me for months. I've always been meaning to post stuff here, but you know when a fic just seems too rambly. And before I start to ramble... :)

Title: all too easy
Characters: Kanone/Eyes
Rating: PG
Summary: Remembering, forgetting, yearning. Set pre-series (w/some headcanon).

It's too easy to remember that they're products of their parents' desire for a new world.

On a rare day, a spring day, with winds heavy with the warm scent of grass and flowers, Kanone remembers. Because it's just too easy. Because he knows that Eyes will never again rest his head against his shoulder, drifting off in a light slumber. Because they can't just sit there like brothers do, without worrying about their lives at any second, sleeping the day away and knowing for sure that they'll awaken.

Under the spotty light of the sun peeking through the leaves, Eyes's slim frame moves slightly with every breath. Kanone mimics something he remembers his mother doing to him, holding Eyes and resting his hand gently on the younger boy's forehead. And just like Evangeline, he buries his face in the soft, tousled hair. The scent of blood is unmistakable, though faint, and it depresses him. His chest swells with helplessness, anger, anxiety. Because he wants to be able to hold him like this after every time he takes a life, just to reassure himself that Eyes has survived another day. Because he can't help but think that they're just hanging on by luck, if even that.

Within Kanone's hold, Eyes stirs, and he's surprised that he had fallen asleep so easily. It takes a second for him to register the extra weight on him, the almost comforting arms encircling him. He's no stranger to his displays of brotherly affection. That's just Kanone, the boy he had grown up with, saw death with, forged an unbreakable bond with. Giving without asking, even though he had never known altruism. So when he fully awakens, Eyes decides against pulling away from Kanone's arms and his warmth. He feels the sensation of foreign tears slipping through the pale strands of hair, the only part of the gesture Kanone wasn't emulating; he refuses to repeat the smile upon her lips at the scent of blood that wasn't his.

And Eyes decides to yield. Because maybe he wants to forget that he was made from selfish boredom and not love. Maybe this is something he wants, just once more, oh just this once...

Because it's just too easy.

Too easy to be reminded of the people who don't care about them, the people who pretend to, the people who have to disappear so they won't have to. Too easy to feel like they're going to dance in God's hands until the devil claims them in Hell.

Why, why can't they be effortless?

Like holding one another, like the hopeless tears falling, like wishing for another day-

They just want to be effortless.

But it's too easy to remember that, effortlessly, their world is falling apart around them.
