Hi Lj,
So I have a job. It's a freelance job that pays! Yippee! I might have mentioned it before, or maybe not. Anyway May will mark the second month of everything up and running. As a student I am generally recruited to work for start-ups. I try to be conservative and safe when accepting jobs, but this is one where I feel i am not taking on the risk, which is a huge comfort. Anyway when i first started talking to my client, the work was really spread out, especially since I was still being considered and he was still putting his team together/in early stages of development. So I would submit maybe 2 sketches, then get feedback, then do some more work over long periods of time. It really amped up when things got going again in February, however because things got pushed back a month I still had a good 2 months to put together 5 discreet images. However, now that things are finally on track, I have to crank out six+ images each month! Keeping up with work has been tough, especially with my school work as well.
I was really afraid that I got too far behind on my schoolwork to pass one of my classes, but I talked to my professor and she said that I can still get a C in the class. Thank God!
Getting behind with schoolwork really pushes me further behind with work and everything really turns to shit. My client is really understanding though, which I'm really glad about.
So I guess what I really am in the need of doing is adapting to getting 2-3 drawings done each week, 10-15 hours of work. This is great though! Having a regular commitment i think will definitely help me get more organized in the long run.
First of all I really need to utilized weekends where I don't have commitments. Summertime is shaping up to be an extremely busy time despite having less classwork to deal with.
This weekend I've been using the
"Make Comics Forever Schedule" that I got from
gallo_de_pelea back in the day. Don't know why i never tried using it before. It's awesome cause things get done, but without all the stress of my usual methods.
The only bad thing is my computer keeps shutting down. Lately my fan as gotten really loud and my computer has been overheating like once a day, which means I probably need to save up my hard earnings and get a new machine. The surface of my tablet is pretty scratched up too so I might look into replacing that as well.
The other thing I am worried about is Steampunk World's Fair. I am so excited about it, but I haven't had a spare moment to put together anything to wear or any props. I don't even really know what I want to do either.
Amber has this whole group costume planned with this beautiful bustle skirts with matching vests and jackets with these huge ornate revers. They are gorgeous and I would love to make and wear the outfit, but that's not what my Steampunk character is, or what I wanted to get into.
I wanted to put together those serviceable work clothes that I posted last summer. I want Combinations/gymsuits that I can throw sturdy work dresses or skirts and aprons over. I want them to have Incan designs smocked into their collars. I want dieselpunk evening clothes, a slinky gold colored dress with a large headdress to match, a kokoshnik like the one the android wears in the Yoshiwara in the movie Metropolis. Then after I am satisfied with that I might want to make Victorian evening clothes.
I am a printmaker. I want to fashion a shoddy little portable press that I can carry to the con with me and crank out imperfect drypoints on the fly. I want an apron covered with ink stains, I want to walk the halls with blackened hands!
I don't know where to focus my energy as far as making steampunk stuff in time for the con, and I also need a proper hourglass corset if I'm going to make the outfit to go with Amber's group.
So internet, help me out. What are you guys making/wearing/bringing to World's Fair?
P.S. Did you guys see this drawing I posted to my tumblr?
I'd love to make this or get it commissioned for next year.
