You know how sometimes some people have a mild handicap of sorts? It could be anything from, say, not being able to detect changes in pitch very well...hampering his or her ability to play an instrument...to poor hand eye coordination, which means shying away from sports ( Read more... )

Your trip sounded like fun.

As for the skill versus passion part: I think that in life there are those who say "I can't" and those who say, "I'll try". Of course, if your "I'll try" only leads down one road and anywhere else you end up is considered failure that's one thing, but in my findings it's easy to throw your hands in the air and give up and blame the handicap. I say keep going, and even if you can't let's say master someting to the level you want, you're probably able to use what you know in other ways to enhane it anyway.

Personally, when I got to university and wanted to study writing I got the "You got ideas but they're plentiful, you don't have the skill/that stuff will never be taken seriously" but skill is attainable (how competitive I am on a world wide level is another thing altogether) and so what if I'm not where I thought I'd be ten years ago - I know that I've come a long way and there's still a lot to learn.

I guess my only problem is with the 'you/they can't' before the attempt is even made.

Heya! Yep, Bangkok was fun. It's a pretty eclectic mix of traditional and modern, so it's pretty damn tough to not be able to find something interesting to do in the city.

Your trip was fun too, yes??

I hear you regarding the "I'll try" bit. People don't give others enough credit for having the balls to even get to the "try" level.

"You got ideas but they're plentiful, you don't have the skill/that stuff will never be taken seriously"
It irks me to hear people pass comments like these. If it's obvious that the person is open to learning, regardless of their skills, why try to cut off their interest by putting them down before they've even started? Jeebus.

Ling, you're not trying to take up tennis, are you? :P
People who make those sorts of negative comments are plentiful and usually under-achievers themselves. If someone truly had passion for what they were doing, they wouldn't even pay any attention to comments like that.

I bet you justified your purchases in Thailand by saying, "Hey, at least I saved so much on cheap airfares"! C'mon, admit it. That's what you were thinking!!

Tennis? Hell naw. Even I can't delude myself into believing I have the physical capability for that :P

LOL! How well you know a girl's mind! That, AND that I got my hotel room for cheap! So even though I spent, I saved! I'm not sure if you can wrap your head around that kind of logic, though :D
