Wild Girls

I am watching this cool show on Athenian democracy. It seems that in ancient Greece, at the age of 6-7 years old young Athenian girls were expected to make a 2 day journey to a certain sanctuary where they lived for a year as wild animals. That is just excessively strange. Also, were we more savage at that age? What does "savage" mean here anyway? What does it mean that they had their girls live as "wild animals"? Because I'm pretty sure it doesn't mean they let their kids loose in the wilderness to forage for their own food.

When you get home you can watch the program. It obviously doesn't elaborate a whole lot. I can't imagine that they actually let them loose to forage on their own, but it does sort of sound like that. They didn't really think much of their daughters.
