Penelo had started the conversation by giggling at Larsa, who didn’t think his questions were funny at all. Vaan and Ashe were off towards the entrance of Jahara, and Balthier, Fran, and Basch seemed to be wrapped up in their own discussion. Penelo and the young lord sat separate, and Penelo had to really smother her giggling before she offended Larsa by mistake.
“It’s complicated,” she responded quietly to him. She watched as Balthier took special notice to something, and excused himself from the fire. A small blush tinged her cheeks and she was glad that Larsa didn’t seem to notice.
“How is it complicated? They treat each other quite strangely. I just don’t understand.”
“Well, you are young, Larsa…”
“What does my age have to do with anything?”
“Just that - well, it makes sense for you not to understand,” she quickly answered. This would be a harder conversation to side-step than she thought it would. Why did Larsa have to be so curious in his youth? She blamed Vayne. She didn’t know why, but she did. He was perfect to match any blame to. “I wouldn’t look into it until you’re older. Vaan and Balthier… well… they have a ‘special’ relationship.”
“Special? How?”
She tilted her head back to stare at the sky, seeing stars try and peek around the cloud cover. Sometimes it was possible to have too many questions. She wished she could tell the boy that. Yet she didn’t, and so instead she resumed trying to dig herself out of her hole.
Maybe a white lie would be better. “Vaan wants to be a sky pirate, so it’s kind of like he’s Balthier’s apprentice, so they keep close together often.” There. No harm done. But… what was Larsa looking at? Was he even listening to her?
“Oh, I see.” He paused, still not looking at Penelo. “Do all apprentices kiss their teacher?” he asked, a small spark in his eyes, as if to say 'are you done lying to me now, Penelo?' She hated how he could do that so easily.
Penelo’s blush suddenly deepened and she hid her face in a hand. Oh god. They really shouldn’t be having this conversation.
“L-Larsa… don’t watch,” she finally managed meekly.

Always Trust Fran
Penelo had learned the hard way to never, ever doubt Fran. The viera knew what she was talking about, and who was Penelo to ever go accusing her as wrong?
“Where’s Vaan and Balthier?”
“They are occupied with something. It would be wise not to find them.”
But Penelo had shrugged that answer off, knowing that the pair were probably distracted anyway, and Penelo couldn’t possibly make it worse. So she had wandered through the corridors of the Strahl, a certain liquid-like flow to her steps, poking her head into each room. What on earth were those two doing?
And that was when Penelo had finally found them, knocking first on the door, and opening it carefully when she got no answer. She stared widely, a hand drawn up over her mouth to muffle her gasp, and she quickly closed the door again, backing away, trying to blink away the image of Vaan laying across Balthier’s chest, both half dressed and frazzled, and completely out cold.
She was never going to doubt Fran. In fact, she would always ask Fran things first. Trust a viera to know what she’s talking about.
…Well, at least the two hadn’t been naked. Penelo didn’t need that scarring in her mind, though she was sure that if her timing had been different, she would have had it.
