I've found that winter/cold weather tends to do that to people, actually. Even here, where being tropical, we get bouts of heavy rain (and hail, at one point!) and darkness looms over the usually sunny city. It's during these times where we get seriously bummed out or sleepy and just plain depressed.
But then again, think about how the English must feel; it's almost this bleak every day! :)
The Chinese have a saying, translated loosely it's "With every mountain, there's always one taller." It's something like a happy-go-lucky phrase, or at least I choose it to be, that means if your life sucks, someone else's sucks more. That phrase however, is also used to say that even though you crossed one hurdle, there's always a higher one waiting to be passed
