Indecisive

One thing that is always on my mind is the constant debate of what I am going to do with my life as a career. I've thought of everything from interior decorator to a pharmacist to a forest ranger to a realtor... plus about fifty different career paths in between. The problem is that I like so many things. The other problem is that my future job ( Read more... )

Hey cool! :)

I think we talked about this before. Just to refresh my memory:

What is the average salary?

What all does being a broker entail?

What skills are needed to be a broker?

What are the cool aspects of the job and what are the difficult/stressful aspects?

Where do I go to get my classes and license?

What type of environment is the work set in?

Does the job generally come with benefits or does that depend on the company you work for?

Who do I end up working for?

What happens when it is a sellers market?

I like the fact that it is in an office setting. I always loved that type of atmosphere. I also love the fact that it is all email/phone/mail. I think this is something I would be very interested in doing. :) $300 for the classes/license isn't bad at all! I'd just open up two commissions and get that license quickly. :D

Thanks hun for everything. :) That is great advice. I hope you're feeling better. :( I read about your torn muscles!

salary is partly commission based. Typically you get around 30k base if you join a firm plus part of the broker fee on the loan. If you do it alone, you're pretty much commission based ( ... )

Interior decorating? Do it! You could have a show on TV called... Girly Eye for the Amish Guy or something! XP

Honestly though, the pharmacist option sounds like it'd be worth it to go to college for, and the only thing against that option that you've come up with so far is possible stress on the job, which is normal for every job. Besides, four years may seem like a long time, but it's relatively short in the long run, and you have your family to help with your parents now.

Financially, the government would probably help you out (so long as you look into it and fill out whatever forms they need, which isn't very much or very stressful from my experience). And hey, if the government is willing to pay for your college, I say take it. I'd rather my taxes help someone through college than feed a fat, rich guy in Congress.

Sadly I wish I could help with great advice, but I'm 28, and in pretty much the same boat as you. I don't know what I want to do with my life, I need to find a carrier that will be stable, actually make a worthwhile living, and something I enjoy (and I have a 4 year degree in a major that really doesn't get great paying jobs).

Also, I may be moving back down south to a warmer area because the winters in Ohio are not nice to my body x.x

Boy, heavy post, Shaye!

Have you considered getting licensing/experience in landscaping AND interior design? Perhaps you could get on staff at a real estate business as part of a house-flipping team. I've heard that's hot right now...

And it'd keep you employed year-round :)

I hope you can come to a decision--I know how hard it is trying to decide what to do with one's life :P Especially when it can affect SO much of your future...

Oh man. I'd *love* to do house flipping. That'd be the cat's meow! :D

Well, Rogue's post up above striked a fancy with me, and I could even do house flipping after work. I'd just get a house that didn't need a shitload of stuff done to it and then make a small profit. I could even be my own real estate broker. XD Also, being in that field of work would let me meet other interior designers and landscapers. :)

I would honestly suggest finding some sort of carrier center and talk to the people there. It sounds kind of cheesy, but that's what they're there for and they are experts at untangling the web of "well here's what I like and here's what I want to make!" Also, talking to a person face-to-face will help answer a lot of questions you have and help personalize your job search. What may seem like a fantabulous job on paper might not actually be right for you, and they'd help you see that.

...and speaking of that, I need to take my own advice >.< I'm going to need to find at least a temporary job by this summer since funding from the University will run out and Kiro and I won't be able to live on his salary alone. Then I have to figure out what the hell I want to do with my life. Fun fact: going to graduate school does NOT mean you know what your future will be like...it means you spend thousands of dollars and write a huge-ass paper.
