lately i've been confused about using commas with but and and. It is some british conjunction use worksheet i was reading and now i am perma confused.

I like thai food but it is too spicy.

When writing a list, using a comma before "and" is generally considered to be optional. I was taught that it didn't matter, as long as I was consistent. However, using a comma before "but" is necessary. A lot of the EFL resources are not of a very good quality. You wouldn't believe some of the errors I've come across.
