Oneshot | Myungsoo/Sungyeol | Angst | PG
Summary: Nothing matters for as long as Myungsoo is by his side.
It’s early in the morning and Sungyeol finds it kind of weird how his brother, Sungjong, is crying at the breakfast table again. It’s been happening a lot lately and he’s still trying to figure out why. However, whenever Sungjong tried to tell his brother the reason, Myungsoo would laugh and Sungyeol wouldn’t care anymore.
They’ve gotten ready for school and have a few minutes before they had to leave. Myungsoo, Sungyeol’s boyfriend, looks at him with a sweet smile on his face. As they all attend school together, Myungsoo’s going to walk with them there. He does every morning, actually. Every single morning.
‘You’re not eating again?’ Sungyeol asks, pout evident as he nudges Myungsoo with the pointy end of his spoon. Myungsoo chuckles and shakes his head, arm comfortingly wrapping around Sungyeol’s shoulders to make the pout disappear.
Sungjong chokes and pushes his bowl away, losing his appetite. He never liked it when Myungsoo showed up and acted sweet. Myungsoo never acted sweet.
They’re walking down the footpath at the side of the busy freeway, Sungyeol holding Myungsoo’s cold hand the entire time. Myungsoo offers to carry Sungyeol’s backpack for him - and weirdly enough, Myungsoo barely ever brings his own - but the older boy declines because he would not ever let Myungsoo hold him bag for him.
Their group of friends are waiting for them at the front of the school per usual, waiting by the gate. As they arrive, Sunggyu immediately places a warm hand on Sungyeol’s forehead, moving it down to his cheek to check his temperature.
‘You feeling okay?’ he asks in concern.
Sungyeol shrugs the other away with a scoff, thinking that Sunggyu worries too much. He then sees Woohyun standing behind Sunggyu with his lips pressed into a thin line, eyeing him weirdly. Dongwoo’s standing beside him, Sungjong in his arms as the youngest of the group didn’t stop crying since their departure to school. Sungyeol doesn’t see what the big deal is. It’s been like this for weeks, perhaps even months if only Sungyeol can remember, and Sungyeol hasn’t bothered to ask why everyone is so fussed over him; not with Myungsoo idly by his side, anyway.
What Sungyeol doesn’t register is: It’s just an ordinary school day, but to Myungsoo it’s been a not-so-ordinary several months.
They walk into the school building with Sungyeol’s fingers still intertwined with Myungsoo’s, giggling about a lame joke the younger student had come up with. The other students look at Sungyeol oddly, like something wasn’t right, but Sungyeol couldn’t care less. To be honest, he was too busy with Myungsoo, to infatuated and in love, to care about anyone else. He’s happy and he deserves to be happy, as Myungsoo also says.
First period of the day is math or philosophy - Sungyeol doesn’t really give a crap. He’s sitting next to Hoya, who has his head hung low and a very serious expression on his face. Sungyeol grimaces and pinches the other’s cheek playfully. Strangely, Myungsoo doesn’t get a chair and instead stands next to the edge of Sungyeol’s table. He doesn’t seem to mind though. He’s just happy that Sungyeol is happy because that’s all that matters.
Second period is a subject Sungyeol doesn’t care about. Since Sungyeol is in a daze, listening to Myungsoo tell him make-believe stories, the teacher picks on him and demands him to answer his question from the textbook. He’s about to truthfully say that he hasn’t been paying attention, but Myungsoo’s distracting him with imitating the teacher’s nasally voice and then all of Sungyeol’s attention is back on Myungsoo’s again, not a care in the world.
Recess rolls around and Myungsoo drags Sungyeol to the rooftop, making it feel like they’re on an adventure to somewhere far away, with just the two of them. Myungsoo’s walking across the narrow edge, arms out to help him balance. Sungyeol doesn’t really worry and just watches him - It isn’t like Myungsoo’s going to fall and die. He wouldn’t dare to leave Sungyeol alone in this world filled with people who look at him weirdly and always ask him if he was okay. Myungsoo wants to keep Sungyeol all to himself and at the moment, he’s doing a very good job.
Third period is mostly just Sungyeol staring out the window, watching as the rain droplets collect on the window and slide down the glass. The thunder sings and the lightning flashes, and Sungyeol is just reminded of how much he hates this type of weather. It’s depressing. The stench is fowl and the wind blows rain into your eyes. This type of weather always makes Sungyeol feel slightly gloomy and just plain tired. But it’s okay, on days like this, if Myungsoo has an arm around his waist and is whispering sweet promises in his ear. Everything’s okay when he hears Myungsoo’s voice.
Fourth period is when both Sungyeol and Myungsoo are bored. Myungsoo loves pranks, so he creeps up to the teacher and makes funny faces right at her. He doesn’t really care if he gets thrown in detention, he’s doing it to make Sungyeol laugh. The teacher doesn’t seem to mind Myungsoo sassing her, so she continues on with the lecture. This only makes Sungyeol laugh even harder and now everyone turns and looks at him with that same odd look. Sungyeol dismisses them because Myungsoo sits on his desk and pats his head soothingly, telling him everything is going to be alright. Sungyeol believes Myungsoo’s every word.
Lunch is a repeat of recess, except this time Sunggyu and the others are calling him and texting him about eating lunch. Sungyeol ignores their texts and proceeds to hug Myungsoo in the rain, not caring at all about how soaked he will get. The calls and texts come again so Myungsoo suggests Sungyeol throw his phone over the ledge. Sungyeol obliges, laughing hysterically as they hear the touchscreen device smash into pieces on the cement pavement. For the remaining duration, Myungsoo walks along the edge again and Sungyeol just watches. He forgets to eat lunch again.
Fifth period is a dud until Myungsoo enters the classroom and shows Sungyeol some stupid card tricks that are easy to work out. Sungyeol’s laughing at how lame his boyfriend is and how cute he can be. Woohyun jabs him at the side and Sungyeol’s smile is replaced by a frown. Woohyun looks utterly frustrated and he tells Sungyeol to get his head together and something along the lines of Please Sungyeol, all of us are so worried about you. Sungyeol brushes him off when Myungsoo teasingly bites the piercings on his ear and runs away. Sungyeol chases him around the classroom until he’s tired. It’s not fair, to Sungyeol, how Myungsoo’s never out of energy.
It’s Myungsoo’s idea to ditch sixth period and so Sungyeol obediently follows. He leads them all the way to river they always used to play at. The river is surrounded by higher-up grassland and trees. The rain has eased a little and is a rather gentle spitting instead of an actually shower like it was before. Sungyeol lays in the wet grass and closes his eyes in content, listening to Myungsoo’s addicting laugh, his breathing and the wind.
Suddenly Myungsoo’s voice seems distant and so Sungyeol opens his eyes to see where the other had gone to. And then Sungyeol looks around - a rapid current swerving around jagged rocks, a fallen tree that had somewhat decomposed over the river. Sungyeol recalls a very stormy day where Myungsoo had tried to cheer him up by goofing off on the tree trunk, jumping up and down on it. Reliving the memory, Myungsoo climbs back onto the trunk and laughs happily. The sight makes Sungyeol breathe in a sharp breath as his chest gets hit with a pang of stabbing pain.
Sungyeol finally remembers that this is exactly where Myungsoo had died three quarters of a year ago. Myungsoo turns to him with a sweet smile on his face and when Sungyeol blinks he’s gone.
And it hurts so much because Sungyeol can’t count the amount of times Myungsoo has told him forever.
