I'm still avoiding that Neuroscience paper, but I've at least been catching up on the other course I want to finish this spring, an independent study articulating what I do to move students and clients into states of consciousness conducive to creative expression and transformation. That sounds fascinating... I hadn't quite thought about dance or art therapy quite that way before (and I'm not even sure that's exactly what you're describing) but that gives me some more insight into it.

(Now I'm hoping I'll remember more about this when I'm healthy and able to think again.)

Ah, yes, you are in the non-ordinary state of consciousness that illness takes us into. Not so conducive to thinking - or even creative expression. Yes, I am talking about dance and art therapy, mainly. I use creative arts therapy techniques in situations that are more human potential oriented (rather than in, say, psychiatric institutions), but it's the same type of process.

I think of it as geting from outer to inner space, dropping the shell and responses that work well as filters and opening up. Finding ways of smoothing the way for that sounds like something valuable to share ;-)

Yes, nice image. And of course we have the shell for good reasons, and have to be sure it's safe before we drop them. That's very much part of what needs to happen, that feeling that it's OK in this situation to drop those defenses for a little while.
