No, we saw that and were initially puzzled that it didn't have any effect. But we figured that it was for the headphones.
I probably didn't describe the problem clearly -- this was an ipod sitting in some sort of contraption with speakers. It was the contraption that had a "-" button and "+" button -- only they resembled little screws. I'm sure I noticed them when I ran my hands over everything while I was pursuing my logic "I know a two year old can do this because I was in the room when he did it". The "screws" are positioned one on each side of the front, and they look like they could plausibly be holding the thing together in some way, if they were indeed screws -- further real screws DO have + or - on them (for the screwdrivers).
But in this case the + and - referred to volume control.
