so, here i am. feast your pancams on bonneville crater. a bit prettier in color, but still pretty bland. i hope i'll get to go look at my heat shield on the far side. maybe the impact furrows dug up something interesting.

Any idea what the shiny blue-white thing is on the ground about a quarter of a way across the picture? Looks like ice or something.

iron oxide. rust. it's all over this place. kind of intimidating for someone made largely of metal.

there is a bit of a debate over how it all got rusted. did it rust way back when there was water on the planet, or is it the result of being constantly showered by iron-bearing meteorites?

Perhaps there was once a lot more oxygen in the atmosphere. That's how iron oxides formed on Earth. Photosynthestic bacteria generated oxygen which combined with iron dissolved in the oceans.
