People are really exceptionally touchy on the internetz. I saw on stupid_free how a girl said that mentally disabled people had no business in her honors college. People were calling her bigoted. I didn't read all of her post, but the idea that mentally disabled people (read: retarded) shouldn't be in an honors college is really not far off ( Read more... )

You should read a story by Kurt Vonnegut called Harrison Bergeron. It's about a near future where no one is allowed to be any better than anyone else. If you're attractive, you wear a mask. If you're strong, you wear weights on your limbs. If you're smart, you get this implant in your ear that keeps you from concentrating.

That said, it seems hard to believe that an actual mentally retarded person is attending any college at all, though I guess anything is possible with entitlement programs today. It's more likely someone in a wheelchair who appears retarded. I had someone like that in a math class. He had a laptop built into his wheelchair and could do his work just fine, but could hardly talk. Or maybe it's an autistic person.

It annoys me when people play the race card for that reason; it's the boy crying wolf.

On the other hand, there are plenty of people who just don't go by the same definitions as others out of sheer ignorance. I've known a lot of people who'd judge Stephen Hawking as retarded just from his appearance.
