The Only On LJ Files #1

As I become more and more accustomed to other forms of social media besides LiveJournal, I find that certain information suits different audiences better than others. My parents and extended family can read my Facebook, so I am unlikely to talk about girls there. My real life friends can read my twitter, so I am unlikely to talk about my internet ( Read more... )

For what it's worth, and I'm not sure if I've told you this, but my boyfriend and I met on OKCupid, and I know at least two other couples who have successfully had matches on there. And in each case, the couple ended up together because of geeky similarities/interests. (Ryan and I, incidentally, both went to the midnight showing of Watchmen and bonded over that.)

So, seriously, of all the dating sites out there, that's the one I totally, totally will vouch for, every time. I don't know what it is about that site -- probably the types and variety of questions you have to answer -- but it produces really good, interesting matches. So seriously, good luck, and I hope she doesn't eat spleens.

I actually didn't know that!

I think the huuuuuge variety of questions makes a big difference, but I think the IceBreakers feature is the kicker. The fact that it takes a common interest and you have to write a message based around only that is just a cool little thing. Also, it's free, so it's perfect for poor geeks!

1. There are cute, geeky, non-murderous girls on the internet. Not only am I one of them, I know a ton both via the internet and real life via college. You can usually tell which ones want to eat your spleen fairly quickly.

2. A very, very large portion of the couples I know right now met via internet dating sites - including OKCupid. Actually, it's been only OKCupid and JDate. Unshockingly, I mostly know geeky couples.

3. Good luck, be happy, and don't worry about your spleen too much. (Which actually brings up a question I have had for a long time - what is a spleen?)

4. Do keep in mind that she's probably as nervous that you will stop replying as you are. It's hard to be a geeky girl and date.

1. Oh, I'm well aware of that. Half my flist is cute, geeky, non-murderous girls who I've met in person. But none of them are talking to me on a dating site and have a hobby/potential occupation that is the most awesome thing ever. There has to be something to balance those things out ( ... )

Has she been published? Does she take commissions? Would she be interested in signing on to draw a few pages for a pitch from some unknown writers who are hoping to break in?

*cough* Um, I mean, woohoo, girl! I can't vouch for OKCupid - when I signed up after college, one of my top matches was a girl I'd briefly dated in college with whom I very much did not get along. But I did meet my husband online, so YMMV.

She apparently did a small and crappy webcomic in the past, but is self publishing an issue of an actual comic shortly and has ideas for other things. I don't know about commissions. I don't think she'd sign up for that. She's more into writing and drawing and isn't thrilled with the idea of working with other writers.

Your Spidey-punching-himself icon always makes me LOL.

Also, if she is a vegetarian, it's a good bet she doesn't eat spleens. Unless she's a vegetarian EXCEPT for spleens. Is it bad that I am now curious about the taste of spleens?

Apparently beef spleen tastes "a little like calf liver but slightly more chewy." As it turns out, beef spleen sandwiches are eaten in Sicily.

Who knew?

Yay for cute girl on OKCupid! Good luck and if she needs to take your spleen, may it be for power over taste. :D
