Swing and a miss

Summary: Makoto is out practicing her batting when a new face shows up on the field.
It's a beautiful day in Splendor. The sun is shining. Birds are singing. Makoto is no longer on death's door thanks to her fall in the fountain. In fact, she is out in the park messing around with the new pitching machine she wished for. She's never really handled one before and is having trouble getting it to work. After some fiddling with the settings she dashes to the home plate and grabs her bat, waiting for a ball to come her way.
She waits.
Waits some more.
"Augh!! I wish you would work you stupid thing!"
Finally, there's some noise and a ball zooms towards her face. With a surprised yelp she jumps back a bit as the ball strikes the back fence with a clang, heart pounding in her chest.
