I've been wondering the same thing. It seems like besides the posts of new arrivals, most people are just sitting here, growing complacent and doing time.

[He'll refrain from wishing him a happy birthday, despite catching his drift. ...if there is such a thing as 'happy' birthdays in the first place.]

[ 'happy' birthday or not, it's only so touching to receive the comment from a stranger in the first place. ]

Yeah, it seems like it-- it's not that there's an awful lot to do besides that but it's surprising how many people seem content with stagnating or who, after time, have resigned themselves to accepting this as their home.

...I get that some just don't have anything to go back to, [like him-] but in a place with this much potential, they just sit around and do nothing? I'd get bored in no time.

I would as well. Though the question is-- what is there to do, right? How have you occupied yourself?

[You think growing older in Splendor is bad, try spending 150 or so years as a spirit in a ring.]

It sounds to me like you have nothing to blame but your own shortcomings for letting yourself grow so stagnant.

[ definitely got him beat there. then again, if he was existing at the very least, it wouldn't be so bad. ]

While I haven't exactly been proactive in anything of particular importance, I wouldn't say that I've personally grown stagnant. I haven't lost anything at least. The thing I don't understand is how normal it's become for so many people. We celebrate holidays here because it's futile to imagine going back home to do so now.

It is simply human nature. Most are happy to live their lives day to day clinging to whatever semblance of peace or normalcy they can. Very few bother asking so many questions as you seem to.

I take it baking was never much of a hobby of yours before now.

[ laughing shortly ]

No, it wasn't. Of course, I didn't have much of a reason to take part in that kind of activity previously.

Maybe it's true that most humans are like that but there are a select number that seek excitement, even if it's hidden under wraps. The want to escape from their normal lives lying dormant inside them, or something like that. If I can, I think it would be interesting to push them past that barrier.

Ah? Ah?? ..Eh, oh!

[There's a breath, and then a far too enthusiastic and overbearingly loud -]

Happy birthday, then!

[ AGH- get out! worst birthday wish, seriously.

there's a long, long pause and finally a sigh before he responds. ]

Thanks.

No problem, I already gave you a gift a while ago, as a matter of fact.

[He starts talking immediately after Izaya finishes, he probably took his breath to talk right in the middle of thanks.]

unless his present was the fact that he was still alive. ]

You... did? Sorry, I don't recall.

[ putting aside for a moment just how horrifying the idea of Izaya baking is (and wondering who would even teach him how), Crona hesitates for just a second before holding the Seal up to his mouth, voice taking on the same tone it always had with the informant-- before their last conversation, that is. for now, he'd like to pretend it had never happened.

regardless of the fact it's Izaya bringing this up, it is something that's been plaguing his thoughts more and more over his months spent in Splendor. ]

R-regardless of whether I have or not [ he honestly isn't sure if he has or not. ] ...I don't think it's as bad as you're making it out to be. A-after all, some people here came from "s-such mundane lives", right?

[ Crona, you have no idea. either way, the moment he hears Crona's shaking, timid voice over the seal, Izaya smiles. their last conversation aside, he couldn't help but find it a little bit amusing that even though Crona didn't like him (was scared of him, is what he's really thinking), he still takes the time to respond. ]

Mundane or not, I think most people had at least a bit more productivity throughout their days. Like school, or work-- the jobs here are something but they're not substantial in comparison, if you ask me. Then again, maybe I just can't wrap my head around the idea of living a mundane life.

[ a beat. ]

I'm just curious-- have you?

[ the real question he wants to ask is, if you have, were you all alone? ]

[ YOU JERK!!!!!! ]

Y-you're right. I had school...b-but that doesn't mean people can't do those sorts of things here to spend the time, either. [ --ah... he's starting to regret this already, the other already turning his words back at him. ]

B-but I guess that's what you meant by creating possibilities...

[ is his responding amusing? maybe not, for Crona. it's more surprising-- even to himself. it isn't like he usually makes an effort to talk over the Seal, either. ugh-- but it isn't like Izaya's special, or anything, just that Crona might rather talk to the guy from a distance than in person. ]

--Um.

[ WOW HE REALLY DOESN'T WANT TO SAY THIS- ]

I don't know. Maybe.

[ misery loves company, right? -- or something like that, since it didn't really count the same when one of them was such a liar for his own ends and appearance. anyway, Crona has agreed that he's right and that's all he really cares about, if anything.

it didn't surprise Izaya at all. Crona seemed masochistic enough to do it-- though to be fair, it wasn't just him he felt that way towards. humans as a whole were masochistic in their extended hopes to connect with others, or out of their curiosity for what they might find, himself included. whether there was distance between them or not didn't really matter. the only thing Izaya needed was words, even if the oppressive atmosphere of invading Crona's space was helpful in intimidating him. ]

You don't know your own birthday? Isn't that the saddest thing of all? You don't have a birthday that you know of and so, even if you had others to celebrate it with you, you wouldn't have a date to do it.

Adaptability is a human trait.

Reply

voice. valhallicity May 6 2011, 07:51:46 UTC
It certainly is but when adapting, isn't it more sensible to adapt for the better, for the interesting, than it is to adapt for the mundane humdrum of day to day? If one had the choice, that is.

Perhaps the most sensible route isn't always necessarily the road to survival.

voice. valhallicity May 6 2011, 08:27:10 UTC
Very true- but I don't see a reason a different kind of adaption would hinder one's means to survive in a place like Splendor.
