[Alex shoved the stupid little bean stuck in his pocket into the dirt of one of Edel’s plants before setting off, just before the sun rose.
he’s been very careful about a single thing and careless about the rest, but he’s finally, finally done it. blood - not his - is soaking the ground near his feet, and the animal is dead and no one or no thing

it smells a warm, touchable body further down. it is blind to the Locals, but the city is so clogged with delicacy, who could care?]

Trunks is walking home from Wonderland, already finished with the first, deep in thought about the last. He's never shopped for a cookbook before, never even bothered with one back home - Mom did all of the cooking anyway, and the stuff he needed to know he learned by practice. Would the bookstore have anything basic enough for a starting baker? How basic would basic baking be, anyway? Maybe he should already get one that's all focused on tiny, fancy-looking cakes or someth-
He stops in the middle of the street, and sniffs the air. What is that smell? He reflexively turns his head down, and pinches his nose shut. It's like a freaking sewer, except Alpha doesn't have faulty drainage, really shouldn't be this bad or -
sniff - getting stronger and - another quick sniff - sewers don't smell like... blood, in appreciable quantity...]

Alex hops into view past the last corner, laughing and spinning on his heel until he can balance, mongoose absent and wiping the corner of his eye with his forearm. he sees Trunks and stifles enough to greet, waving.]
Ah, ha-- Hello!

It's only a little after that when the blood registers, sharp and cloying and near and why is it all over this guy -- his eyes widen, confusion and alarm starting to trickle into his expression.]

he tilts his head and smirks dimly.]
You seem distressed today.

What happened? Why are you a mess?

Fexis is a bolt, an arc from on high behind, a bee line to Trunk's back with no body but teeth and nails.]

[The sudden flare of pain cuts him off; he's motionless, back arched and mouth open soundlessly as he's trying to simultaneously process where and how and what the HELL was that and WOW THAT HURTS]

and Alex goes, running just a few steps before launching himself forward in a forward tumble. his chains fly out behind him and arc high, heading down with the speed of his landing.]

Training moves him when the mind does not; he quickly springs back, putting distance between him and the kick or punch that would surely follow --
-- the (foot?!) chains are a very sharp and nasty surprise. They slice down his face, wicked silver flash across an eye, slash down his body; he doesn't even drop to his knees or scream in pain until the chains are through with him.]

He can (half) see the knee coming, but he (trytry can't) doesn't dodge or even block it. The blow knocks his head back, almost rocking him off-balance, and sends another wave of pain and blood down his face.]

before he can exact his move, Fexis grabs him by the sides of his head and jerks him away, overeager, and causes him to shout in protest.
no, child, smell! listen!
and he does, stamping his foot flat and turning the chain to dust. the awareness makes him laugh.]
Oh, yes, now...! [Trunks is forgotten in place of the fresh scent, one Alex has been eager to snuff out; he and his blooddrunk familiar waste no time, racing down a narrow street and banking a sharp turn out of sign.]

-- just in time to get a glimpse of Alex rushing away and - NOHeMUSTN'TtooDANGEROUS- out of sight. Trunks staggers to his feet, biting back a cry as the movement sets off more pain just about everywhere on him. His sight's no good, but his ki sense easily fixes on the wrongness of his assailant.
And where it goes, he follows, one clumsy step after another.]
