[Edel receives a lazy smirk in exchange for that sharp, hassled look.]

You should have asked if they preferred their criminals flayed or hanged.

Fire witches? [it's as much a prompt as a tease.]

Witches- female magicians who can control and summon fire. Their temperaments can be somewhat dangerous...

Then dump a bucket of water on them and be done with it. [his leg twitches; are you even done yet? sheesh.

beat. lightly:] Or snow. I guess.

Witches aren't like that. Just what kind of fantasy world do you live in, Alexander?

[a careless shrug. he lifts his head enough to fold his arms underneath, a better prop-up than the pillow.]

All of the farmers in Olvoski make their cattle eat basil. It is because there is a breed of monster that will crawl in through the mouth of a cow...or a sheep and drive them mad; they will kill their masters and the other animals. Very...[exhale.] very tricky to stop. Fighting cows. Unless they ate basil. For some reason, the monster cannot go in when that is so.

Simple solution to a big trouble. Not everything has to be complicated.

[ Alexander may notice that Edel has now completely stopped bandaging, mid-bandage, in order to listen in to this ever so intently. There is sort of a lean to his pose now, as if to gain more information by getting closer ]

Really? Is this true? Perhaps the studies on the medicinal qualities of basil extend beyond the physical realm, perhaps it can also work as a holy ward against monsters. On the contrary, it might have a chemical inside that the monsters simply despise and thus find unappealing. Basil is considered a majestic herb, it is considered king in culinary terms, too!

[ And he backs off slightly to murmur ] And yet, to think your world has to worry about even it's own cattle going insane... just when do you get rest, Alexander?

[Alex has to fight the urge to roll his eyes at this plant fanboying. sheesh, Edel. don't be a dork. 'majestic herb.' snort.

he turns his head, smirking dryly up at him.]

When I feel like it. Cattle is fine enough, but I prefer faster things. And bigger things, when I can get my partner to follow along. We specialize.

Ah, I see, you enjoy the thrill of the chase, the fight for the kill...

[Alex only gives a shallow smile to the prompt, staring past him.]

I told you. It is what makes me feel good, and I am good at it.

[ Edel looks up, his face scrunching at the thought of enjoying oneself through battle. Ugh. Whatever, Alexander. He certainly isn't going to be gentle with you here. With one last knot, Edel tightens the bandages around his friend's leg to be snug, if mildly uncomfortable. ]

Simply barbaric.

[he smashes his face against his forearms to muffle a sound; he forces himself to draw it out into a laugh.]

You can stop that now. [ His eyes flicker from the wounds on Alex's legs to his friend - ] Just who do you think you're trying to fool? Do not think I have no knowledge of the feeling of agony and pain, Alexander.

[ Ever the dry tone. ] You might not believe this, but it's fine to show weakness in private.

[the chuckle tapers, but his face remains buried for a length of time. stewing? asleep? who even knows with this kid.

he finally stirs, squinting out of the corner of his eye at Edel.]

This is not private. [smirk.]

No, of course not. [ Edel's face softens, he's far too used to this by now. ] If this were entirely private, you would be crawling on the ground agonizing about your life in the middle of the town.

... Or worse. Who knows what would have happened if you were found by someone else.
