John - I am glad to see that you are looking forward to the class and what you may learn. I know that you have gained incredible practical experience with your position with the Struthers Journal, but as you say, it is important to get away from the desk and the computer monitor. It is so tempting to be the kind of reporter or editor who never leaves his or her desk. Because of the availability of information online, it is almost possible to never leave an office. But I believe that quality reporting can't be done without total immersion of all senses. Your Allentown stuff was rich with the kind of details that you acquired because you went there. I am glad you are in the class and look forward to a great semester. Alyssa
Hey John this is Josh from class, and I think it's interesting how you got to where you are at YSU and deciding to major in Journalism. I'm looking forward to seeing more posts on your blog. It seems interesting. Oh ya and maybe you can help me make my blog look a little better.
You certainly have a wide variety of interests and expertise beyond just journalism, which I think is important. Your background in math and current editing experience could really help to make you a very marketable prospect in a tough journalism job market. Do you like editing? I, personally, would rather write/report than edit. It's certainly important, but hardly as fun.
I'm looking forward to the road trips as well. Perhaps this time, there will less imminent-death situations. :) I think it's awesome that you've settled into a very grown-up position so gracefully. And Alyssa's right, it's easy to stay behind a desk, but you've always been pretty adventurous, so I'm sure it won't be too hard for you. Can't wait to work with you again.
John.I think its great that you already have so much experience in writing and editing prior to even graduation. You will be way ahead of the game when you do graduate. Also, I can relate to your late choice of major. I just recently added Journalism as a second major after taking an intro class and really enjoying it. I can't wait to hear about your traveling experience.
