Redirecting email at UWA

There are a number of different techniques you can use to redirect your mail at UWA.

Apparently it's poor "netiquette" to post a long entry in full on the planet/LiveJournal, since it clogs up others' friends pages, or something.

Students are no longer allowed to redirect to an off-site email address, and instead are encouraged to use client-based (ie. Outlook, Eudora) email or the webmail system (ugh). However, the instructions provided for setting up client mail do still work, even if only POP3 access is offered.

However, Gmail currently support retrieving mail from POP accounts, as well as forwarding all mail to any other account, so theoretically, you could just sign up for a Gmail account and use this as an proxy - that is, using Gmail's bandwidth and CPU time to redirect email for you, which is a lot more convenient than running it all locally, I suppose. (This may violate their terms of service.) If you use Gmail for pretty much all your email as I do, though, this is a good solution. (Yes, we've all heard about how Gmail destroys your privacy and Google wants to eat your children. Thanks.)

This in fact works for any email address, although if you're wanting to download mail into Gmail from a webmail account like Hotmail, or some other crappy one that doesn't support forwarding or POP (hurrah for lock-in), you're SOL.

The email system for staff members is different, though. (I've only been around since the start of this year so I have no real understanding of the 'old' systems, please feel free to correct me on anything.) Currently, the only official ways to access your email (for faculties using the ITS Exchange server, which is apparently not everyone) is via OWA, which supports calendaring, contacts and the other features of Exchange, or directly using Outlook itself (I think the server is just exchange.uwa.edu.au, but AFAIK this is supported by ITS so you'd just need to call them for the details). This is a problem for anyone who doesn't want to use/buy Outlook/Entourage (although Mac users can theoretically use Mail.app, and Linux users Evolution, the support at least in Mail.app doesn't seem to be so great), as OWA basically doesn't work on any non-IE browser (ie. only a limited subset of features is available, and the interface is very ugly).

POP access is supported on cyllene accounts, but these are not typically offered to new staff members, and a special application form needs to be filled out. However, if you have a cyllene account, it is possible to redirect mail to it (as UWA allows internal redirection of email), although ITS needs to be contacted for this.

However, there does seem to be one (partial) solution. Apparently, one can use POP on admin-serv48.admin.uwa.edu.au using an Exchange username and password. Secure POP and/or IMAP may work too, but I haven't tested those out. This won't allow you to do things like look at your calendar (which would be possible with Exchange), but IMO is a lot better than having to find a Windows PC whenever I want to check my staff mail with OWA (I manage my own calendar and contact list). Again, you can use Gmail's POP feature to retrieve mail using this server.

I'm told (unofficially) that maybe this is supposed to be firewalled off though, as users are advised that you need to be on the VPN to access the Exchange server (which is certainly true in my past experience, although I haven't tried it since using POP). I'm just hoping it doesn't get firewalled away again, because I'm finding it pretty useful, although I guess if it does I can just apply for a cyllene account.

In any case, if this is "allowed", the ITS documentation needs to be updated! There's a lot of outdated information there, and I've only really explored the bits relating to email (since that's what I've been mucking around with and trying to get working lately).

And of course, if you have UCC mail that you'd like to redirect, this can (theoretically) be done just by editing your .forward: echo your@email.address > .forward. (This will overwrite any forwarding you have in place currently.) I'm told this is hit-and-miss with Hotmail accounts, however, for a technical reason which I didn't myself understand well enough to pass on to others..

Thanks to sweetjesus26 and shmookey for clarifying some of this.
