Here with a amplified author's note Summary: Saving his little brother from being crushed under a gravestone puts Dean under it instead. It becomes a fight for Dean's life and it turns out to never be the same again.
Chapter 1
John was very anxious. He didn't like to bring the boys with him, not even if the hunt would be an easy one and things would be fine. One day he probably would need to start teaching them about what was out there. Dean had picked up a lot already. He did think they still were too young and he did want them to have some sort of normal life.
This night he had to take them. There had been no one he could leave them at, so here he was at the graveyard. He had followed the lead of a hunted house and learned that the ghost was buried at the town's big graveyard. He had said to the boys to stay in the car, but he know that the digging had taken a long time and wasn't that surprised they get out.
John let them be until he was ready to salt and burn, and only looked at their direction at times. It looked like they made a play of hide and seek, with some tag.
Suddenly he heard Dean shout, "Look up Sammy!" It was followed by a break and Sammy's cries. John quickly get up from the grave and run in the direction of the sound. The sight that meet him was Sammy heartbreaking crying at Dean's side. Dean lay prostrated and unmoving. Less than an inch from his body was a grave stone, which John registered must have caused the break.
At Dean's side he immediately felt over him. He did notice that the edge of the stone lay over Dean's left arm, and Johns hand came up wet. He smelled the blood. How serious the wound could be he was not able to see in the dark. To his first relief was that Dean seemed to be breathing.
He had to calm down Sammy next and later ask what happen, if he could get a correct story from his four year old. With a calmer boy, John decided he had to try to move Dean. A decent thing would have been to call for an ambulance, but he didn't think he had a good explanation to say what he was doing at the grave yard at the late hours and absolutely not with two children.
He told Sammy to sit down and he would be right back. John run first to the car and collected his first id kit and then over to the grave he been at to get his spade. Back at the boys, he let Sammy hold the aid kit meanwhile he made a bandage over Dean's head. He got more worried as Dean didn't give any sound from him. He then carefully moved him so there got a little space between his body and arm.
"Sammy, I want you to help me with moving Dean's arm from the stone when I lift it."
The tearstained face of his youngest nodded. As soon as he saw Sammy was ready he took help of the spade to lift the stone. It was heavy, and he had to put all his power to move it enough. Not sure if Sammy managed to do his task, he held out as long as he could and tried to not let it go quickly.
John felt after Dean's left side and was relived that they got him free. Not knowing what damaged Dean's arm was he only tied it after his side, so he would be able to carry him. Before that he had to get his things to the car and Sammy. It took a time to get his youngest to come with him that Johns worry about how it would go for Dean increased. He knew that every minute that went would be critical for his boy.
With both boys' in the car he ignored any speed limits and traffic signs. All he wanted was to get to the nearest hospital as soon as possible.
Chapter 2
John would probably be happy that nothing happened during the way to the hospital. There he could not stop the car fast enough. He opened the straps for Sammy, before he took Dean out.
"Sammy you follow me and do not run away."
Dean still hadn't wake up and if possible his breathing was shallower. John was desperate, and he know that he should not had moved Dean in any way he did, as that so much could worsen his condition. He didn't let that thought paralyze him.
Right away that he entered the emergency room he had a nurse coming up to them.
"Some idiot drove over my boy and then took off, please help me."
The nurse took him to a nearby room and let John put Dean down on the bed. She asked routine questions and she started to look over Dean. Learning that he hadn't been conscious since the accident and seeing the bandage John put on his head she called for the doctor.
John had sat down on the only chair, holding Sammy in his knee. He continued to answer the questions they asked and tried for the moment asks them too much. After awhile they took Dean for x-ray.
Sammy had calmed down to Johns relief and when they where left alone John asked him what had happened at the graveyard. He didn't learn much more of what he already knew.
The following time was anxious, but it would not be anything to what the rest would contain. John thought that they would come back with Dean, but the nurse came alone to get them.
"The x-ray told us that Dean's left arm is broken in two places and that he have a sever concussion and as long as he isn't awake we can't say if he have got any constant damaged." She made a pause and then continued, "We are setting his arm in a cast and then we will take him to a room where we can monitor him until he wake up and we can learn what state he will be in."
It was no good news. John knew that his arm would heal, but head injuries could turn out any way. All he could do was to be at his side and wait.
Chapter 3
It would turn out that Dean would be in a coma for twenty-one days. John had first stayed at his side all hours through the day, but as they went Sammy started to get restless even if all the nurses seemed to be smitten by him and tried to activate him as much as possible.
One of them really pities them and she offered him to come and stay at her place. Not knowing when Dean would wake up and he had limited funds he said yes. It turned out that Jackie lived both close to the hospital and in an area there it was lot of families with children in his boy's age.
To survive the time John made a few works around the town. The first thing he did when he could leave Sammy with Jackie was to get back to that graveyard and finish his work.
When the day's went and Dean still hadn't wake up John felt more desperate and more helpless. He didn't know what he would do if he loosed him. He did blame himself that he had brought them with him and into the life he started after that he lost Mary. He asked himself why Dean and Sammy hadn't listen to him and stayed in the car and then when he first had hear them told them to get back to the car. If he only had done that, then maybe Dean wouldn't be laying in the hospital fighting for his life.
Dean looked so small in his bed, with all the machines and tubes connected to him. It was heartbreaking to seeing his son there. John thought he had became pallid, and it made him even more anxious. John talked, commanded Dean to hang in and not give up, and that he had to wake up. When the accident wasn't any supernatural John felt more helpless to what to do.
John was bent over a car engine when his phone started ringing, and when he answered learning that Dean had wake up he let everything go and hurried to the hospital.
Dean had more colour, but his eyes flickered everywhere. The doctor that had done the first examination of him was on duty and had done the first evaluation when John came, said that it still was too early to know what the head trauma would cause. When John asked if it was common for a coma patience to not be able to focus the doctor answered it was different and depending on what happened to the patience. The doctor was sure that they would learn the coming day's if Dean would be fine.
With Dean out from the coma John felt that he wasn't so close to the death and he for the moment would take anything as long Dean was alive.
Chapter 4
There became new worries for John when Dean didn't talk or showed to make any progress those first days after his coma. The doctor made several test and new x-ray's, and it wasn't good news had come with. John had to comprehend that the concussion and the coma had been because of that not only had the gravestone made a wound, Dean's brain had swollen, and the new x-ray's had showed that there had been some bleeding too. When it still was swollen the doctor said that things should improve, but he could not promise if Dean ever would be hundred recent well. He suggested that if possible John would let them transfer Dean to the closest next city as the hospital there was more specialized in head injuries and had a very good rehabilitation ward.
Sammy seemed to be both happy to see Dean awake and scared as he didn't talk to him and only laid in bed. John had hard to explain for his four year old how it came his big brother was still sick even if he was awake. It was heartbreaking to see his youngest climb in lying beside Dean with his precious car, which he got from his big brother.
For everyday that Dean was awake, he did a few progresses, though it looked like he would need to be trained from the beginning to do things. John had noticed that he didn't flicker with his eyes as much and he did smile when they came. He moved some, but as his left arm still was in a cast it clearly prevented him.
When the progress went so slow John came to the conclusion to do what the doctor suggested. Before he let them do any transfer he looked into if there were any possibilities to get any refunds, or anything to help them. It turned out that he had lucky that the new hospital would help with the cost. Much because they had a collaboration with the medical school and they did studies on how well people with different brain damaged proceed. John hoped that both Dean would be well soon and if the study of him would help others too it was good.
Even if it would work out for payment of Dean's staying and rehabilitation John had to solve his and Sammy's staying. He mentioned his concerns for Jackie that John had come to learn to know quite good during the one and a half month he lived at her place. First she said it wouldn't be a problem if he would want to stay with her when there wasn't that long between the cities, that he could be able to drive back and forth. John was touch by her kindness and would have loved to stayed, but he definitely wanted to be closer to Dean. She understood him and said she would call her sister that lived there, and hear if he could stay there until he found anything else.
The first week was settled and John stayed with Jackie's sister. Then he had found a cheap one room apartment, which he could rent by month. Not knowing how long time they would be there he saw it as a good thing. To his advantage the apartment was furnished and Sammy showed no problem to sleep on the couch.
The hospital showed to be a good one and the special ward didn't save money for helping the patience. Dean was one of the youngest. They encourage John to be there as much he could with taking part in the rehabilitation, also letting Sammy to be there.
All began with them talking a lot with John to learn how Dean had been before the accident and also study Sammy. They said it would help them to know what sort of things they would set in for Dean. New test and x-ray's was done. John learned that they would keep going to make them with short intervals to see if there would be any changing's.
When it had gone seven weeks from the accident they could take the cast from Dean's arm. With him first in a coma and then not been moving around so much had helped to heal the breaks perfectly. Then they started to work more with getting Dean to start moving more. They had tried him to crawl, but noticed the cast be an obstacle. With it gone it helped, even if Dean seemed to avoid using the arm to much.
The times he hadn't the physical training they worked to get him to learn the things around him all to get him to start to speak again. Things did get slow and John kept worrying there wouldn't be any bigger progress and Dean need constant tending. The doctors and therapist tried to say they believed it would be better even if it yet could take time.
