Summary: The rain lure Sam outside, reliving a childhood play.
He didn't need to see that the weather wasn't clear. The sound on the roof had already revealed that it had to be a grey day. It was a light beat on the sheet metal roof. There was only one thing that could cause it and that was rain.
Sam lay in bed, listen to the rain and the other sounds in the house. He noticed it was soothing in one way. Maybe it was so because he could hear it, and he was happy he hadn't lost that sense too. He came to the conclusion that hearing the rain was not enough. He wanted to feel it too.
Sitting up Sam started to feel around to find where he had his clothes, and finding them he dressed. Next task was to make the way out. He had become quite good to get around in Bobby's house, so it went better than it first had done when he came there. When he stood at the bottom of the stair he knew if he went straight for seven steps, turned right and then had twelve to the front door. Bobby knew that he had to keep the way clear for Sam. If he had just taken five steps after the right turn and turned to the left he would enter the kitchen. Sam held out his hands to follow the walls, and feeling the space when the opening of the kitchen came he know that he was half way and if he had forget to count the step he could begin again.
Before he open the door he search at the right side after the cane. He didn't find it. Sam sat down on his heels and felt around on the floor, and still didn't feel the cane. His heart was beating little faster. Bobby didn't like him go outside without it, but he didn't want to go back and try to find it because it was now he wanted to feel the rain. He rose and unlocked the door and went outside.
One, two, three steps, railing to the left and five steps to the ground. With both feet on the ground Sam let go of the railing. He could feel some rain, but he wanted to be out in it so he took six steps straight. He should stand in the yard. There he leaned the head back and let the rain fall in his face.
The sounds were different outside. The beat to the roof was fainter and it was mixed with those on the cars Bobby had in his scrap yard. He also heard that there were places the water had run to puddles.
Standing in the rain remind him of his childhood when he had done it similar, then twirled around. He hesitated, but then he did so now too. Sam didn't care if he would lose his bearings; he just wanted to feel carefree for a moment.
When he stopped, he had lost in which direction the house would be and he might have a trouble to find the way back, but he thought it would have be worth it.
Though he was saved by Bobby, "Sam what are you doing outside in this rain?"
Guessing or more knowing that Bobby had to stand on the porch, Sam turned towards his voice and walked back to get inside.
"It's best you hurry up and change clothes so you don't get a cold." Bobby said as Sam reached the stair.
"Yes, dad!" Sam replied. He hated when Bobby told what he should do or not, even if a little part did like it, knowing someone did care about him.
