Summary: In moments of peril, Balthazar has always been there, death wouldn't change that. Just a little moment in time, inspired by too many feels.
“Balthazar” He whispers towards the phantom vision that stands between him and death, that lets the brilliant blast absorb into him, silhouette framed by the light rushing past him, past them. It makes him cover his face, once able to withstand anything, shield it against the searing attack and the debris flying past him. His arms fly up in front of him, clouding his vision, and for a moment, he wonders if he’s dying, if that’s why…why he’s come.
But then, just as suddenly it’s over, the dark filling the room again, the monster vanished, and it’s just the two of them. For a moment, it’s just the two of them.
“Balthazar,” He whispers again, wondering what this is, wondering if he’s dreaming. “Balthazar.”
And as though, as though, nothing at all has changed, as though it’s not been years that have passed …since…the figure turns, a smile playing at his lips, watching him for a moment, as he struggles up to his knees, his face tilting up in wonder.
He opens his mouth, but nothing more comes out, and as suddenly as everything else, like a ghost, the other is in front of him, still that smile, that familiar smile, and the little twinkle, sadder now, sadder and it makes him ache, flitting through blue eyes.
Fingers reach out, a warmth sliding down his cheeks, tilting his chin up tenderly.
“Cas,” He hears Dean’s voice, suddenly, in the distance, worried, fearful, fearing the worst, coming closer “Cas,” And just for a moment, a split second movement of his eyes, he looks away, towards the sound. “Cas”
There’s nothing there when his gaze returns.
“Here,” He calls shakily back, the smallest hints of heat still playing across his skin, though maybe now they are only his tears. “I’m right here.”
