I hunted around a bit for anything on this by someone more educated or more confident, but soon became lost in the giant happy piles of meta and canonpicking this fandom provides so freely. I did check Super-Canon and the tags here, but if anyone knows if someone else has looked at this before me, point me in the right direction ( Read more... )

That translation (and your corrected spelling) of the Latin works beautifully. You can translate requiro several different ways, too. Demand, seek, search for, request again, require, inquire after all immediately come to mind.

I've been meaning to update with some Latin translations from the eps, as well as other OL Latin resources for SPN writers. Thanks for the reminder. I'll get on that and follow up with you. Cheers!

*g* Thanks for the confirmation! I did check out the other translations of requiro- I love the different nuances they can each give to what Meg was saying.

On the boys-speak-latin thing, I have a distinct memory of Sam saying something in latin, and Dean being all "bzuh?" and Sam being all, "It's latin." But I can't remember what episode it was, dammit. It was early in the series though, I think.

Which would be pretty good evidnece that Dean speaks absolutely bugger all latin, except I can't actually find the quote.

Just, you know, by the bye. ^^;

Oh, dude, really? Nifty. I have totally no memory of that moment at all and I'm about to finish my second run-through, but I'll probably end up doing a third run-through with the *other* flatmate (why she didn't watch it with us on the first run-through I have no idea...) so hopefully I'll pick it up then ( ... )

Yeah, "Something Wicked," that's it. ^^ As you said, it doesn't mean Sam's fluent, or that Dean knows none at all, but it seems to suggest that of the two, you'd probably go to Sammy first if you needed an, um... a latin. Eh. I don't really think "spiritus vitae" is particularly difficult Latin--I picked up what it meant, and my Latin capability is solely from the fact that I'm a tremendous English nerd. Plus, "spiritus" shows up in "veni sancte spiritus" which, dude, if Dean's ever done an exorcism ever, one might expect that he'd have to deal with the Sancte Spiritus in the text somewhere. Maybe that's just me ( ... )

I just realised, John, when he's holying the water in 'Salvation' (does this, BTW, mean John's ordained? Or can any Joe walk in off the street and sanctify your water?) says some latin, including "spiritus sancti" (no, I don't know either why I'm taking it so personally that Dean doesn't get "spiritus vitae") Just, you know, if you're looking at Latin in the series. And hadn't found that example. >_>; So, Dean's never done the holy water gig? Or maybe he just isn't good at cross-contextual comprehension? WHY, DEAN, WHY???
