I work for Greyhound. We have a website for schedules, distance, and all that, and each schedule lays out all the cities the bus goes through and at what time.
If you subtract our layover times, you can see how long it would generally take to drive somewhere, although sometimes GH takes a screwy route between cities. But you can compare maps to our routes and it'll at least give you an idea.
Lawrence is not big. It is very small town America. By far the biggest percentage of its population are students from KU (University of Kansas, home of the Jayhawkes
( ... )
this is...wonderful information, more than i could have hoped for. thanks! your comment about Lawrence being smalltown kind of went to the heart of the problem i was having. also, the Vancouver thing? rings fairly true, from pics i've seen of Lawrence proper. so i guess it's okay to take a little artistic license :) the Jayhawkes are spelled w'out the 'e' on Wiki, so the devil's in the detail...
your descriptions and comments really give me a better sense of the place - considering the whole fic is set there, this kind of info is worth its weight in gold. thanks!! and your fic rocks, btw!
Glad to be able to help. I'm a sucky speller so Jayhawkes might be with an "e" or without ... KU was always one of our big rivals when I was in college, so we spelled it with a whole different set of letters than the KU students do ... cause, like, we weren't really calling them Jayhawk(e)s so much as we were something much more profane. ;)
I think people are of a belief that Lawrence is much bigger than it is just because it is so close to KC. It's really much smaller than many of KC's suburbs, but because it is a college town (and KU is a relatively big school), people think it's much bigger than it actually is. I was reading a fanfic set there not that long ago that had someone taking an hour to drive across town, and I just about fell off my chair ...
Thanks for the kind words about the fic. Always nice to hear. :)
