*pokes your logic* *poke* *poke poke* *poketty* ;)
Here's my perspective: Dean got called on his emo bullshit. Ruby got seriously deadified (in a position between the two boys that, for the record, I wouldn't mind being in myself). Castiel ceased to be a dick. The brothers are no longer cosmically at odds with each other and can go on being BROTHERS, no matter what comes.
These elements mean a satisfied Xtine. I see your point: it wasn't perfect, but I think that given the overall calibre of this and last season, there was no way it would be. I liked it better than S3's finale, I have to say. But it wasn't a heartstopping OMG of S1, or a deeply satisfying end like S2 (A BROTHERLY HUG WOULD HAVE HELPED, KRIPE).
Also, I didn't think Sam's powers were gone? I thought that Ruby said they were in HIM, not in the blood she was feeding him. That, to me, suggests they can come back w/o her poisonous influence.
LOL, just rereading all of that, I realize that I sound like a major BIATCH! *laughs* And I really get all of that, because it was satisfying in a lot of ways; we finally got all of those flippin' answers we've wanted, and the season didn't end on the Sam v. Dean note that everyone was worried about. Plus, we got to see a classic Kripke cliffhanger, which you know just makes that evil little man cackle with all he has in him.
Honestly, my problem is just that I feel that SPN's storyline is devolving into a fanfiction.net plot, which just makes me sad because it used to be so much different. At times, it feels like a completely different show than it used to be, and that's not really the fault of this episode so much as the past two seasons ever since Dean sold his soul.
But, then again, give me enough black-eyed!Sam? And I will sing and praise and love over anything that this show airs, I swear it. ;)
Yeah, the show is trying to evolve what it is with these cosmic war story arcs. That doesn't mean it is doing it well, hahaha. As I said in my own review, Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman did a lot of this in Good Omens, and they honestly did it better. So I was a little meh on that front, and for large parts of the episode (Dean trapped in that room for ages, Sam arguing with Ruby for ages). I don't think you sound like a bitch at all, because you raise very valid points. But I think I was swayed enough by the beginning (BOBBY AWESOME!) and the end (CASTIEL AWESOME! SAMANDDEAN AGAIN!) to enjoy the eppy. Much as I have enjoyed the return to MOW scenarios this season, I think that if they had done said one-off eppies for 4 seasons straight, I would be bored with the show now. The arcs may not be perfect---may in fact be very flawed at times---but they give much more room for prolonged interest and character growth
( ... )
I don't like destiny storylines, and in the beginning it was just weird shit that happened to them. And I liked Dean being the normal one, having to watch his brother deal with being supernatural.
I miss the urban legends. And yeah, thiss show really did used to be scarier. And no finale has come close to being as good as "Devil's Trap" was.
This show used to be more unique than it's become.
I remember a lot of the interviews that Kripke gave earlier in the series, where he said that he wanted his show to not be the endless serial (ala Lost) that you have to watch every episode to understand, but rather a bunch of one-off episodes with an over-arching plot episode every fifth or sixth one or so. But anymore, it just seems like every show is revolving around the underlying plot instead of them just driving to a new place to fight some evil sons-a-bitches and save the day, and that makes me really sad.
There was a time when I was really excited to see a plot episode (because it meant that I was going to see more Sam-stuff and know what was going on with him). But anymore, I just don't care, because it just delves deeper and deeper into this mythology which, frankly, I think is pretty lame and unoriginal. :(
When we only got a few episodes of arc, it was like "OMG ARC EPISODE!", it was the same thing with Dean crying. We used to get it once a year and now it's every. single. episode.
It's like when the radio overplays a song you like, and then you start to find it annoying.
I have been watching since the pilot and have not missed a single first run epi. I've been saying for quite a while that Kripke has sacrificed his characters for his precious myth-arc. It feels so much like a bait and switch on his part.
Like you, this season has left me with so many questions, I think I'm gonna have to post a list and beg for help.
And a lot of the questions really don't make that much sense; for example, why did Sam need to drink the demon blood? The other psychic kids didn't have to, and why did their powers manifest as something useful while Sam was stuck with painful visions? I don't know, it just seems like this show went veering off a cliff, and while I still plan on watching it, I don't think it's going to get that much better now that FREAKING LUCIFER HAS RISEN. >:O
