The sport of champions!

It's summer, and therefore the season for my very favorite sport--baseball! While the sport itself doesn't really fit in much with Dean and Sam's hunting lifestyle, some of my very, very favorite fics in the fandom are baseball fics. Whether the boys play, or go to a game, or just talk about it, the merging of these two worlds leaves me all a-flutter. So, yes, I'm a nerd. Hee. But you can be, too! Take a look at these various fics involving the Winchester boys and the All-American pastime. And, by all means, if you know of any fics that aren't listed here, hook me up! There's no such thing as too much of a good thing. :)

- A Penny for the Old Guy by ignipes (Dean, John, Sam, R)
Birthdays are just another way of passing time until you reach the year you're not going to make it through.
A really real, really unique take on Dean's birthdays through the years. The framing of this fic, through flashbacks and Dean's interactions with an old man, is artfully done. Also, wee!Sam and his love of candy is the cutest thing EVER. :)

- Cleats by innie_darling (John/Mary, PG-13)
John gets taken down. Hard.
Totally different than the usual Dean-centric take on a baseball fic, this is Mary and John at their utter finest. The ending to this fic will make you MELT with happy, while at the same time, it'll tear at your heart, since we KNOW what happens later on in the lives of these two crazy kids.

- Dropped by pheebs1 (Dean, Sam, G)
Sam and Dean playing baseball/catch in some down time when they were younger.
Just a cute little ficlet where Sam and Dean play catch, and some antics ensue. Awwwww!

- Jock Itch by valiant (Dean/Sam, NC-17)
Dean in a baseball uniform and Sam making him wear it during a blowjob.
Yes, I KNOW this fic was just recced, but I couldn't leave it out. Clearly, that's just all the more reason to go and read it. :)

- Left Field by azewewish (Jess/Sam, PG)
An unexpected birthday gift.
This fic is sweet and sad and beautiful all at the same time. Sniff.

- Let's Play Two by brynnmck (Dean, Sam, PG-13)
Sam is rapidly going from "concerned" to "fucking freaked out," because Dean quiet and motionless for so long is just wrong, Dean without a snappy comeback, Dean uninterested in drowning his sorrows in a fight or a drink or a woman whose name ends in "i," and Sam isn't sure what to do.
This fic is so good, it's kind of beyond comprehension. A really amazing look at what baseball means to Dean, and how well Sam knows his brother. A must-read!

- Summer Blackout by nutkin (Dean/Sam, NC-17)
When Dean is seventeen, they spend five months being normal.
It's amazing how in a fic that is not actually about baseball at all, the part that stands out the most for me is the section with Dean and Sam and Gatorade. Because, hi, is that not THE best visual ever?

- The Boys of Summer by ignipes (Dean, Sam, PG-13)
Sometimes, in forgettable nowhere towns between one job and the next, Dean takes off for a few hours without telling Sam where he's going.
In my mind, this is THE quintessential SPN baseball fic. A perfect look at the Dean and Sam dynamic, as told through the lens of the game. The voices here are just perfect, and the overall tone of this fic is something spectacular to read.

- The Boys of Summer (Hot Corner Rag) by musesfool (Dean, Sam, G)
On his fourth birthday, Dean gets his first baseball glove.
How does the quintessential SPN baseball fic get even better? When there's more of it! This remix version of ignipes' fic fits with the original so seamlessly, it's hard to believe they're different fics by different people. This is such a great complement to the original.

- Wherever You Go, There You Are (And Other Lies About Roadtrips) by azewewish (Dean, John, Sam, R)
Are we there yet?
While there isn't MUCH baseball in this fic, the part that does have it is flat-out hysterical. It's the perfect brotherly banter, and that thread carries throughout these various vignettes of the Winchester's travels. Although, admittedly, my heart hurts a little at Dean's choice of teams... *cough* ;)
