Has your OTP/favorite pairing ever changed? anonymous December 7 2013, 15:11:27 UTC
Just wondering if there are any examples of this.

Before I started properly watching Supernatural I used to read Destiel fanfic because shipping a human with a nonhuman angel was an interesting premise to me.

But after buying the DVDs and watching them I found Sam was my favorite character and I now ship Sam/Dean, Sam/Castiel, Sam/anyone. Destiel is a little uninteresting to me now because it doesn't feature Sam :o

I had read a couple fics before properly watching the show, but I don't count that as shipping, it was more like...science. Since I started watching, my OTP remains intact.

That's true. I don't know if my Destiel fic reading was properly shipping, so I wanted to know if anyone had actually changed their shipping preference.

What were you reading before show and what's your OTP?

I was there for the kinky porn, and read pretty much anything that fell in my hands. It was 2008-2009, and there was S/D, of course, Sam/Ruby, some D/C, even Dean/John or Sam/John or S/D/J (and back then I couldn't believe people wrote daddycest!). Probably more pairings that I can't remember because the characters were strangers to me and I had just found a big porn suply in the spn fanom, you know.

My OTP is S/D :) I like some M/C too, but far behind.

Because every post needs one and I wanted to ask if it's been confirmed that 9.10 is written by Dabb.

Why did Gadreel go through the whole pretending to be Sam thing at all, for longer than needed to eavesdrop and then alter the spell? Why let Dean do his confession and pretend to be Sam instead of just knocking Dean out and going after Kevin right away?

Maybe Gadreel is a troll?

General spoilers and spec thread anonymous December 7 2013, 16:45:38 UTC
I'll get us started with something from EW:

[Spoiler (click to open)]I’M DYING AFTER WATCHING SUPERNATURAL‘S MIDSEASON FINALE!! I NEED SCOOP!! - TIFFANY

WHILE WE ALL KNOW THAT DEAN HAS A HARD TASK IN FRONT OF HIM - DEALING WITH KEVIN’S DEATH AND ALSO TRACKING DOWN GADREEL - BUT IN LIGHTER NEWS, I HEAR THE SECOND HALF WILL SEE THE RETURN OF GARTH (DJ QUALLS). WE’RE GOING TO GET AN ANSWER ABOUT WHERE THE HECK HE’S BEEN AND I THINK YOU WILL BE SURPRISED. SPOILER ALERT: THERE WILL BE HUGS. ELSEWHERE, AND ON AN UNRELATED NOTE, I HEAR THE SECOND HALF WILL SEE SOME PEOPLE WE ABSOLUTELY DID NOT EXPECT TO SEE. MORE ON THAT SHORTLY…NOW, I HAVE TO ASK, WHY ARE WE YELLING?!?

So, EW is repeating/selling old spoilers. Garth and the unexpected return (cough Ghostfacers) was already known, so basically - the only new thing is hugs with Garth and his "surprising" whereabouts.

Are we are suppose to be excited about Garth in the brothers reunite episode.

DA

One can't really blame EW, since there's been such a drought of official spoilers all season. If you subtract everything that came from Dot, there have barely been tidbits.

I wonder if they'll have hiatus interviews with the Js and Carver this year. And, if they do, whether they will be a bit less bizarre and confusing than that one J2 interview from November.

In fact, the info that Sam and Dean are apart in 9.11 and reunite in 9.12 came only from Dot, so I don't think it's that we're supposed to be excited about Garth rather than the Sam and Dean stuff, it's that we're not supposed to know anything about the Sam and Dean stuff at all.

some thoughts on tumblr meta anonymous December 7 2013, 20:26:36 UTC
I've been thinking about meta in the age of tumblr, and how being able to break scenes down in gifs, removed from context and scrutinized for any nuances that could support the desired interpretation, has changed fandom.

There are other differences between livejournal meta and tumblr meta, of course, the average age of the user for one. But imo gifs have made a big difference in generating some more extreme interpretations because they allow the source to be filtered and adapted, a lot like fanvids, only easier to make and more pervasive. And a lot of the meta on tumblr is building off what is shown in gif form, commenting on the gif which may or may not be an accurate reflection of how the scene it's taken from played out in context.

There is nothing new under the sun. We are now seeing the television/movie version of experiencing texts through florilegia.

I hope there's a dissertation being written about it somewhere.

So what do you see as key differences between meta on Tumblr and meta other places?

Ha, reminds me of how I can watch Dean and Castiel's canon friendship without thinking about sex or romance at all, only to look at a .gif set and go YUP THOSE TWO PEOPLE TOTES WANNA KISSY FACE ( ... )

The good old days anonymous December 8 2013, 01:41:39 UTC
What was the very first fic you read when you joined the Spn fandom? (or one of the first if you can't remember the very first fic)

And the first art that made you fall in love with fandom artists?

Me:

Fic: The Doors of Time by Felisblanco (or maybe the Homework!verse by Thenyxie)

Art: I stumbled across Nargynargy's gallery on Deviant Art and I never regretted it :)

I've been going through a ton of old stories for A Thing, so this is kinda fresh for me!

I don't know what the exact first fic was, but Beyond Skyscrapers was definitely among the first, and I still have a lot of love for that story. I recall going through the themed rec lists at deancastiel first, so I read everything on those in my first weeks/months of reading D/C. I also recall reading To High Places By Narrow Roads and the stuff by strangenessandcharm when I first started out.

The first fic I read was sort of the occasion for my joining Spn fandom, since it was how I discovered the existence of LJ and fandom as a fanwork producing and consuming thing, was Unoshot's "The Mountains in Reply."

Looking back, I'm amused that I managed to hit on something as rare as Sam n Cas gen for my first excursion.

I don't have a good visual memory, and I can't recall what my first Spn art encounter may have been. Probably something from the BB the summer after s5.

I read tons of genfic when I started out. kroki_refur was my drug. I discovered her via her Jess fic Crow on the Cradle, which made a huge impression on me and is still one of my favorites ever.

I didn't really discover fanart, though, until I got on meme last year and people were talking about fanartists whose bang art they were looking forward to, and I was like, "you have favorite fanartists?" (For context, my previous fandom had a lot of manippers and basically zero people making original art.) So then I started paying attention. petite_madame and salty_catfish were two that particularly impressed me early on.
