Instruction recommendation

I'm in what I hope is the tail end of an unscheduled "vacation" from fanart, from art in general. In order to conquer my rather massive artist's block and crisis of confidence, I've started studying figure drawing a bit more formally. And because I'm impatient and still lack confidence (oh, let's just call it a drive to succeed, shall we?), I'm ( Read more... )

I don't have any resources to share but thanks for those links!

PS those Vilppu sketches look very like Michaelangelo's and Leonardo's.

Vilppu's great, no? Someone namechecked him on tumblr, and I've been fascinated ever since.

I can't believe he teaches in LA--I need to make a way to make that work. Can you imagine?

I really like Burne Hogarth's books...there's several on anatomy and a nice one on draping clothes. Also, James Gurney has two wonderful books out that cover color and imaginative realism! They're just amazing.

Burne Hogarth got a fair amount of my money last time I went crazy--hands, wrinkles, and dynamic figures. He's really good.

My god, I wish I could get the drapery stuff to stick in my head though...

I don't know if I'm ready for colour (scaredy cat), but I could so with some imaginative realism. That's so much of what we're doing in fanart, right, drawing stuff for which no reference exists (at least, what I want to do, anyway)? I will go look that up--thanks!

I just Googled to see if I could find the title of a book I checked out at the library that I really liked--couldn't find it, but I came across this which is insta-bookmark, and it's actually very similar to the one I was originally looking for, it might even be by the same person, idk.

Hopefully that link works. If not, the title's "Art of Drawing People: Discover Simple Techniques for Drawing a Variety of Figures and Portraits"

That's pretty funny--I'm researching refs right now for a picture I'm working on , and the link you gave has a pretty goddamned good back for one Dean Winchester. Which gives me an idea...

Thank you!

I study life drawing at a local school to me in Seattle, WA. Not everywhere has such schools, but there are more opportunities than you'd probably think (wherever you may be). For example there used to be a woman who held life drawing figure sessions 5 minutes away from my house that I only found out about a year ago, and they'd been going on for years. You never know what is out there until you look ( ... )

I actually started life classes a couple of months ago. They've been very useful, not least of all because I get to have someone experienced sit over my shoulder and try and address the same shortcomings I was putzing around trying to work on myself.

But, like most classes I've taken, I like the idea of having not just a textbook, but good stuff for extra reading, hence the solicit. There's only so much I can get from a group class, and reading gives me good questions to go back to class with.

Thanks!

I highly recommend Figure Drawing Design and Invention by Michael Hampton, I find it invaluable.

Wow. Design and Invention. That sounds perfect.

Hmm. New shelf required.
