Creating Gifs With Gimp - Help?

Dear artists,
I am very new to the art side of things, I haven't even posted anything yet. But I'd like to; I'm currently working on a prompt from the Triple Play Challenge at ohsam. Unfortunately, my muses ran rampant and now I'm a little stuck with gimp. So I'd love to talk to someone about their experiences with creating gifs there. Specifically, is

Thanks for your interest in this project of mine. I did get further, but only after hitting a few dead ends with some ideas of how to go about it. So I'm still right in the middle of everything and I fear that the poor promptee, rainylemons, might by now have given up on the possibility of me finishing this, ever. *sigh*

No one else commented so far, so I guess people just usually don't do this kind of thing because it's too much work (now I'm aware of that, too), or maybe my questions spoke of too much inexperience, I don't know. But so much time and effort and tears (I'm not even kidding) went into this that I'm compelled to finish it, no matter how long it might take. I could come back here and reply again when it's done if you'd like to see the result. Might take a while, though ;).
