Hello! I'm
angelicfoodcake and the wonderful
oxoniensis asked me if I'd want to do "Ask the Artist" this month. To be honest, after looking through the other entries, I'm a bit intimidated (and honoured) now.
I've included a somewhat NSFW-ish picture under the cut, just so you know! (Nothing graphic, but better safe than sorry ;) )
About me
<- I need a new fashion sense :DI've had a pretty varied fandom-life so far, starting out with several manga & anime-fandoms (like Yu-Gi-Oh!... I was young, okay?
There are embarassing fanarts to show for it), Pirates of the Caribbean (as a Norrington-fan), hopping over to Doctor Who after a short stop in the Age of Sail-fandom until finally arriving where I am now with occasionally dabbling in other fandoms, like "Sherlock" :D)
I never had any formal art training, but would love to study a bit with other artists, just to get to know other approaches on doing art.
You can find all of my SPN-fanart under my "art"-tag in
my journal here. I also have three deviantart-accounts where my SPN-art is scattered, one with a
nickname I no longer like (which is inactive),
my regular one and one for my
pairing & higher rated art.
What I use for my art
Pretty much whatever I can get my hands on, I have to try out. Though I really prefer to either draw with my Wacom bamboo in my (approaching ancient age) Photoshop or with my water colors on Hahnemühle bamboo paper (sense a pattern here? XD)
And I mean pretty much everything, I did several fanworks with
air-drying modelling clay and sometimes I even draw on canvas shoes :D
Drawing process & coloring
Because I was asking beforehand on twitter if any of my friends'd like to know something and got general stuff + coloring as an answer :D Here you go:
Usually, I start with a really messy scribble and might do several of them until I end up with something I like... or I stumble upon a nice picture which I then try to use as a reference for the base sketch to get the figures to look somewhat natural (and yes, I admit that I have a problem with poses if it's non-chibi). After the sketch, I try to put the reference(s) out of my mind, that way, I have more freedom :)
I did put together two .gifs for my two most recent pictures during different stages :)
Chibi!bunnies:
Sometimes, I do animated fanart, like with these bunnies. I don't remember where I've gotten the idea from, but I knew that I wanted to animate them with twitching ears :D (Every animated part was drawn on a separate layer and they confused me a bit xD)
And the first thing I usually do when drawing chibi!fanart is laying down some general colors just to see how they look together, then shade it completely with a hard-edged, pressure sensitive brush :D.
Wake up, Dean! For this one, I used a pretty limited palette and a single layer for the colors for a change, usually I just grab whatever colors I feel like using (Not a wise approach, but it's such a fun one!) and end up with more layers that I can count.
And as for brushes: I mostly use pretty basic ones, because I've got to admit that I never got the hang of using textured ones...
I sadly can't do this for one of my water color pictures, because I always forget to take WIP-photos of them XD Though, have my first try of Sam and Dean together instead (
and try not to laugh too loud, okay?)
Inspiration
Most often, throwaway comments by friends (for crack-ish art at least XD You really shouldn't mention things like "
Dean, the beauty pageant-queen" or prompt for "
Dean/Castiel - done in Sanrio's Little Twin Star-style" around me :) ) or fanfictions. Even if most of the latter don't end up being more than scribbles on my harddrive.
Well, that's what I've had prepared. If you want to know anything else, just ask me in the comments :D
