July recs

Here's a mixed bag of J2 and Sam/Dean fic recs. July has not been kind to me, and I didn't get as much done as I'd have liked, but these are all wonderful stories and well worth your time.

1: Hearthstone, by mollyamory

Beautiful J2 AU.Jensen is a wealthy recluse who has a secret. He seems to have put his life on hold until a very handsome baker moves into town and opens a coffee bar.

2: Creature Comforts, by dimeliora

Jensen Ackles, heir to the chain of hotels that bear the Ackles name, is looking into why one particular, smaller hotel has a far better overall rating than all the others. To do that he decides to go and stay there incognito and ends up working with the different departments in the hotel to see exactly what they do. He finds that they are incredibly friendly, likeable people, especially the tall guy with the big smile who works the night shift.

3: The Unsuitable Slave, by anniespinkhouse

This is a J2 slash au of monumental proportions. anniespinkhouse has built a world peopled by differing nations who are vying with each other politically and philosophically. Jared is a prince who has never been permitted to stray outside of his own little world because of a prophesy. His mother, the queen, is ailing and his older brother has recently been killed in the latest skirmish in the war with the neighboring country. Jensen is a prince of that country, and when he captures Jared, he takes him as a slave. That's how this saga starts. I could not put it down from start to finish.

4: Steam, by bellatemple

This is Sam and Dean at the end of the world. I found this story fascinating. It's a post-apocalyptic look at what happened after the world ended. Dean's insistence that he is going to keep the Impala running despite the lack of gasoline gives the story its title. It's a magnificent read, and the Sam and Dean portrayed here are fascinating, as is the relationship between the two of them. Genfic.

5: Oh, My Queen!, by cherie-morte

Supernatural ended 3 years ago, and Jared cut Jensen off without a word. Now, Jensen, who is becoming a successful director, is trying to recruit Jared to play the lead in a movie he's working on. As they reconnect, Jensen finds out just why Jared walked away from him all those years ago, and he's got to totally re-think their relationship.

6: A Fire Ever Burning, by bewaretheides15

This is a Sam/Dean crossover slash au with our favorite hunters in the world of Anne McCaffrey's dragonriders. Sam is a dragonhealer and Dean rides a bronze. All is well until Sam finds himself in the wrong place at a hatching.

7: Metaphysical, by cjmarlowe

Another Sam and Dean au, gen this time. It follows a similar pathway to the original first two seasons of SHOW, but it's very different. Dean's baby runs on steam, and this is an era of airships and automatons. Sam and Dean are looking for their father in a world without internet. It's fascinating.

8: Struts and Frets, by hobnailedboots

In this J2 au, when Jared is cast for Supernatural, he thinks the show could go far. It's got a great premise and excellent writing, but unfortunately the man who was cast as Dean is a total waste of skin, and he's dragging the production down. There seems little hope for the show, and then Jared meets Jensen.

9: As Long As We Have Each Other, by hunters-retreat

J2 au. In a futuristic world, where a battle is raging between the state and the resistance, Jensen is in charge of Wacey 1003. The Waceys are humans who exist in a walking coma, and who have psychic powers that can be controled by their partners. They've been together for three years already, but Wacey 1003 shows no signs of waking, and when Jensen discovers some of the plans the state has for him, he begins to wonder if that's a good thing or not.

10: House of Broken Souls, by anniespinkhouse

This is an incredibly well plotted, carefully crafted J2 au. It's NC-17 and features two broken boys with secrets that threaten to destroy them and a young woman who doesn't remember who she is, and sometimes becomes someone else completely. There's a serial killer on the loose to add to the suspense, and so many interesting characters that I couldn't put it down until I'd finished it. Brilliant! Go read it!
