Rating: PG.
Pavel Chekov can't explain why he enjoys the company of the Elder Spock so much. Perhaps because the older man knows another version of Pavel, one who has already proven himself to the crew and who is not considered a child.
Pavel is seventeen but for him it is only a number like the millions of others that roam through his head. It does not effect his ability to navigate the ship nor does it preclude him from being a valuable member of the crew, but there are so many who look at him and see only his age.
He's met others for who his age was an attraction. They lust for Pavel's age and perceived inexperience.
Pavel Chekov will be very glad to be eighteen, then nineteen. . . even thirty sounds better than seventeen.
But the presence of the Elder version of Spock is comforting in a way that Pavel can't describe. Every evening after his shift he goes to the Ambassador's quarters. Sometimes there are others there. The Captain is a frequent visitor as is the younger Spock. Chekov has even seen the Doctor in the Ambassador's quarters. They are all cordial but they seem uncomfortable around the Ambassador, but the moment he steps into the Ambassador's sitting room and scents the Vulcan tea and the incense, Pavel feels almost if he were home.
Tonight there are no other guests in the Ambassador's sitting area. Just the Ambassador himself.
"Greetings Pavel. I trust your day went well." This Spock doesn't quite smile but his emotions are more obvious than the younger Spock. Pavel likes the lines that crease the older man's face. It is a face that has been used, to smile, to cry, and even laugh. This Spock is far more comfortable in his skin than the younger version. Perhaps that is an acceptance that only time can buy.
"Da, it went very well. Mr. Scott and I worked on amplifying the sonic structure of the sensors. I believe it will increase their efficiency." Pavel likes that he can talk about his work and all the amazing technology aboard the ship and that Spock understands and even offers suggestions and opinions. Pavel will occasionally bring something with him, a relay that needs repaired, or a PADD that is malfunctioning just to watch the older man puzzle over it for a moment. Together with heads down speaking to each other in words understood by few except those in engineering they can work together seamlessly.
But tonight they merely speak of Pavel's work or Spock's newest ideas for the Vulcan colony. Pavel seldom asks about the other version of himself. Sometimes it feels like he is speaking about an older more accomplished brother. One he'll never measure up to especially in the eyes of Spock.
He knows he has a crush on this Older Spock, but he doesn't expect anything to ever come of it. Pavel's careful not to touch the other man, knowing about the telepathy of Vulcans, besides he's certain that it would be unwelcome. So this night they talk until late and Chekov sips tea and watches every move that the older Spock makes.
When it's late Pavel excuses himself and allows Spock to guide him the door. For a moment, Pavel wants to ask to stay. Just to be allowed to sleep in the same rooms without touching.
It's incidental. The smallest of touches when they both move for the door. But Spock's hand caresses Pavel's wrist. Pavel can't help but give a little sigh of contentment.
"Moy Miliy." The Russian endearment in Spock's gravelly voice make Pavel blush and stammer.
"I am sorry, I should go." Pavel feels his cheeks burn and wishes that the very stable floor of the Enterprise would open up and swallow him whole.
"Moy Miliy." Spock repeats his long fingers coming up to caress first Pavel's cheek then his chin.
"You are very young, Moy Miliy, but I am flattered that you think of me this way."
Pavel can't help but nuzzle his face against the older man's fingers. Pavel hates being seventeen because it will keep him from having this. If he were older like The Captain or the Doctor this would not be a problem.
"You do not need to be like them. You are more than enough as you are, and what you are deserves more than a man lost in time. A man old enough. . ."
Pavel puts raises his own hand to stop the other man's words.
"Did you and the other Pavel?" He has to swallow his own words with his jealousy. If the other Pavel got to have Spock then Pavel will curse whatever fate put him in this universe.
"No. I admired his mind and his spirit. We were friends and shipmates, but nothing more. Only you have considered me this way."
Pavel smiles broadly then raises himself up a little. "Then he was a very foolish Russian." The kiss is brief and startles the other man but it makes Pavel smile.
"We have many days before we arrive at the Colony, Lubov. Perhaps, they will be enough days to convince you."
Spock arches his brow then merely nods.
