A sad time indeed, Peter Falk died last night, at home. He suffered from dementia for about 3 years. I reproduce a small piece I wrote in December, part of a friend's challenge to write about favourite 70's TV

There is a (blurry) shot of his police ID in one show. Geeks have been blowing that shot up for years to no conclusion - LOL! Seriously, this is for me, genuine sadness. I didn't watch Columbo while it was still in production (would have been too young to really appreciate it)but have seen it in reruns as an adult when I've had access to TV channels that carry 70's TV series. Falk's an actor for viewers who like a bit of challenge and humor, and I can see why people liked the show. Multi-layered characterization, subtle humor, depth -- he's fun to watch. Naturally I'd love to see those episodes with cash, Shatner and Nimoy!
Here's a link from the Public Broadcasting Service series "Pioneers of Television" featuring Leonard Nimoy discussing Falk's performance and gift for characterization. Hope it works:

Trivia: He's one of a few actors with a "glass eye" that made it big; his eye was removed due to cancer when he was 3. 3!!
His first name was never mentioned on "Columbo", nor his wife's, though he referred to her constantly.
