ST09 Writer Fail

Jan 30, 2011 13:59

Am I over sensitive? This clip which I just caught on Youtube seems dubious in the extreme, and makes me think of the new ST writers in an uncomfortable light. I know it was cut, but that it was in there at all squicks me.

Kirk is LOOKING RIGHT AT the woman as he speaks.

It does not allow embedding, so here is the link

I saw that on the extras. My guess is that they originally thought this might show Kirk as maturing (a little), even though it shows what an idiot he is. The girl looks like she gets this all the time, and she's "too busy doing my job to slap you, whoever you are".

I don't think you're oversensitive. The writers are guys and may have thought this would be a funny way to get back at Kirk.

I'm hoping that they realized that the (immature) humor of the scene didn't work. Even good writers/directors make mistakes. It's something the phenomenon of DVD extras tends to expose.

When I first saw the clip on the DVD I laughed at Kirk because Gaila is so much more curvy than this girl, and of all things Kirk should remember THAT.

I just went back and watched the clip on my DVD, with commentary, and there was really no explanation of why the clip was either created or cut. Plus, the guys on the commentary chortling at Kirk's cluelessness reminded me of Beavis and Butt-head. (Abrams, Burk, Kurtzman, and Lindelof.)

*eyeroll* Boys.

Eyeroll indeed :-( I suppose a lot of stuff gets written/filmed then they discard the dross. At least they had decency to snip it. Yeah, and Kirk of all people probably never forgets a pair of boobs!

I remember watching the clip when I first got the DVD and was relieved they cut it. I sort of agree with you. IMO it was suppose to be a 'funny' scene--Kirk 'mans' up and says he's sorry...but to the wrong girl.

Ha Ha

Yeah, I don't think all Orions look alike either, Kirk wouldn't forget her (or her boobs) and of course it would be terrible to put in because Gaila DIED.

I think JJ mentions the scene during the audio commentary of the film (when Spock is confronting Kirk about cheating and the camera shows a glimpse of Gaila sitting, looking pissed behind our favorite Vulcan), but doesn't say why it was cut. Hopefully it was because they realized it really, REALLY didn't work.

Grrr arrgghhh, S-c. I also thought it was racist/speciesist when I first saw it on my DVD. I'm shocked at the number of folks at YouTude who thought it made Kirk more appealing.
