Why Are Thin People Not Fat?

Feb 03, 2009 23:20

I've just watched the fascinating BBC programme Why Are Thin People Not Fat?. They gave all sorts of reasons, and then concluded that fat people shouldn't feel discouraged about losing weight as even a little weight loss is good for your health.

I am thin because...

a) I exercise.
b) I eat healthily.

But mostly it's the exercise. Modern life leads us to sit on our arses all day long. We drive to work, sit to work all day, drive home and then sit in front of the TV. The most walking we do is to fetch a cup of tea and then walk to the loo.
It's hardly surprising that people have to eat ridiculously, unnaturally tiny quantities of food to compensate for the lack of activity and stay thin.

Add cheap crap junk food into modern life and SHOCK! Everyone gets fat.

Ah, forgive me for voicing my crazy, crackpot theory.

Actually, even with all the exercise and healthy food, I'm not "thin" to be thin I would have to starve myself, and I don't have time to exercise more than I do - 90% of my time (minimum) is spent sat on my arse.

The fact that I'm under prescribed with throxine doesn't help. It's too easy to gain weight and very difficult to lose it as I used to be able to do (too much thyroxine in my case could kick off the atrial fibrillation I had when my thyroid was over active). I'm trying extra hard at the moment to watch what I eat and use the exercise bike more. I should really go swimming. Surprisingly I'm relatively healthy according to all my blood tests and BP results.

PS. Just watched the programme. Interesting.

I know when I'm full, but that doesn't always stop me eating.

I'm on a diet though, and have lost 30 pounds so far.

Also, cooking helps me feel less bored/sad/depressed.

I have a small appetite to go with my small frame. I don't exercise anywhere near as much as I should, but I don't own a car so I walk and cycle a fair bit out of necessity. If I follow the same pattern as my Mum, I'll stay thin until I have kids.
