I've just watched the fascinating BBC programme
Why Are Thin People Not Fat?. They gave all sorts of reasons, and then concluded that fat people shouldn't feel discouraged about losing weight as even a little weight loss is good for your health.

a) I exercise.
b) I eat healthily.
But mostly it's the exercise. Modern life leads us to sit on our arses all day long. We drive to work, sit to work all day, drive home and then sit in front of the TV. The most walking we do is to fetch a cup of tea and then walk to the loo.
It's hardly surprising that people have to eat ridiculously, unnaturally tiny quantities of food to compensate for the lack of activity and stay thin.
Add cheap crap junk food into modern life and SHOCK! Everyone gets fat.
Ah, forgive me for voicing my crazy, crackpot theory.
Actually, even with all the exercise and healthy food, I'm not "thin" to be thin I would have to starve myself, and I don't have time to exercise more than I do - 90% of my time (minimum) is spent sat on my arse.
