Howard looks at his hair, too long and annoying, and he realizes -- shit. Vince must be really pissed if he hasn't done his midnight barbering.
"Vince-" Howard mans up. "What I said -- I didn't mean it."
Howard regretted the whole conversation leading up to this. He'd been drunk. He was tired of listening to Vince come in early in the morning, clearly worn out and well fucked, sleeping all morning and then showing up in the shop like it was nothing.
"But you said it!" Vince snapped. Although he had been only angry and defensive, Howard knew Vince well enough to know that he was hurt, and that was the worst part. "You said I was a dirty slag!"
Howard ran a hand through his hair. " I didn't mean - it's just..."
"Just what?"
"It seems like a lot of people." Howard tried to explain. "Because none of them..."
Vince's scowled. "None of them what, you berk."
"None of them are well, you know, I may have been a little -- what I'm trying to say is, I stepped overboard and --"
A look of comprehension that Vince rarely achieved crossed his face. "You're jealous!"
