we do good things because:
  • there is a god worth fearing;
  • we share a common goal of advancing civilisation;
  • we revel in the delight of peer approval;
  • social structure demands it;
  • we have a natural disposition towards it; or

that a combination of all those reasons lead us to do good things - if people do have a natural inclination to do good things(and several do) it would be because - we believe there is some inherent system of rewards and punishments in the universe, because we want people to like us, and because hey, you have to do something.

I suppose what I'm saying is - there may be no such thing as pure altruism, but that doesn't mean there's no such thing a sincerely good deed.....
