Waffles?

Mmmkay. I keep going back and forth on this question, and I have gotten mixed responses so far when I ask people, so maybe a definitive poll will help. (If it's a tie, I'm pulling my hair out).

Celes received what I would say is a Honourable Mention at Megacon. I want to fix a few things (scallops at the front need to sit better, and I'd like to ( Read more... )

poll, celes

I'm going with no, maybe out of state where people haven't seen it yet. I entered JACON with Rydia and won Best Originality, which I considered a small award for the amount of work put into it as a whole, but was DQ'd at Metro for entering her again (as in, not eligible for an award). I mainly entered so Yaya could see the costume, since I was excited about meeting her, but the judges also wouldn't allow me to receive anything (even after 8 months of work). I've since decided it really is only fair to enter once and win an award, especially since awards really aren't that important. Yes it's nice to win, but not important. It's not what I base the cosplay experience on. Also, a lot of people will see it as bad ettiquette, and I kinda look down on people who win an award more than once in the same exact area, especially if they are major awards (yours isn't, but I'm just stating my thoughts here). Yours was a group judges award, which is kinda iffy since I never seen anyone win an award like that, but it's almost a major award ( ... )

Thanks for the input - it makes a lot of sense, and your experience with Rydia puts the question into perspective ( ... )

I think it would be an excellent choice to enter at Animmazement, that's the con I had in mind as a suggestion since I know you hit it up. I honestly feel that your costume is very worthy on an award, but I don't want to see you get involved in any potential drama. Because that stuff always tends to happen over these little things. I know you are not an attention whore, far from it - I can always smell one from miles away. It's just a 'convention ettiquette' kinda thing, ya know? It's a gorgeous piece and I definately feel you should enter it someplace else, if I could travel more I'd definately want to enter Rydia again, with a few adjustments and additions.

Thank you for your advice and compliments! Maybe you should think about AZ, if not this year then next year! It's actually cheaper than the larger Florida cons, even with the travel and lodging (it's about 150-200 total, including room, airfare, and food if you're sharing a room with people. The atmosphere is also very different because there's not nearly as much drama as Florida seems to have - it's a very warm and welcoming environment even for people that aren't from there.

/public service announcement.

Seriously, that might be an option if you're looking for a change of pace or would like to bring some old things out for another run.

I wouldnt... I learned the hard way about enteriing a costume over and over my first year. Once people ahve seen it in a contest, its much harder to win something even if you improve it.
The onyl time I enter a costume a second time in an event if its was first by itself, then I would enter it in a group later, like I did at Megacon with my Ocarina Ganondorf. I may be doing the same thing with my Windwaker Ganondorf, but we shall see...

From talking to the different people, it seems that the general idea is that if you enter somewhere and win a prize, you shouldn't enter somewhere else unless it's a good distance away because it's not fair to other people after you've already had your moment in the spotlight. It's not a written rule anywhere, more of an etiquette type of thing. The level of expertise grows from a career award total, not the total off of one costume. So, me entering at Metro isn't fair, but entering at AZ is ok since it's further away. I learned these things from talking to people that have been doing this for a while, and it makes sense to me when they put it that way.

Enter it at AZ, dude. I fucking love their setup, not only because they are unbiased and true craftsmanship judges, but because you get to tell the entire room about your outfit. Last year a lot of the people new to cosplay watched so they could learn about what goes into the creation of it all.

Personally, I feel if your costume doesn't win an award that starts with "Best of" then it's okay to enter it again (if you've done work on it). But why go through the hassle in FL if no one is gonna give you the time of day just because you've rocked the stage at Mega?

FL is kinda funny with the whole "ZOMG you got an award no moar 4 u" kinda thing. In CA you regularly see groups/individuals pwn at multiple cons statewide (like the rad-ass Dynasty Warriors group last year or the Takarazuka Berusaiyu no Bara group a couple years back). I can understand once you've got a 'Best of...' award, okay fine....but where did this elitism in FL come from? I've been blissfully unaware of it til now lol. It's not like we don't have lots of cons that people can enter either... Maybe if FL started using the ICG divisions for cosplayers (novice, journeyman, craftsman, professional) we'd have less of the 1 award thing.

Sorry...just thought I'd throw in my thoughts. If it wasn't for FL weirdness, I'd totally enter Celes at Metro, but apparently I'm in the minority lol. AZ is a good alternative IMO.
