Sometimes I close my eyes and I can remember another life, a life worlds apart from here, from now. A life dictated by the needs of the village, a life rooted in tradition and superstition, in the knowledge that if you didn’t move from the circle of firelight at night, all those sound and things beyond the light, the things that lurk and eat small children for breakfast could never touch you.

I remember the darkness to our backs and our faces to the fire, as he spoke. His voice is old and dry like wind through branches, shaking brittle, heat tortured leaves, but it has power behind it. We sit watching him, listening; His toothless gums chewing on words and spitting them out, tasting them first. His words fill our heads and stir our collective memories, jarring ancient rhythms from long hibernations. Drums from somewhere echo the thrumming of our hearts, mirror the blood coursing through our veins; it is almost as if they are coming from us, starting deep down inside of us and moving through us. His brittle leaf voice rises and falls in a wordless song.

Sleeping children are abandoned to the safety of the fire light. Bare calloused feet pound dusty ground like the pulse of the earth, kicking up red dust.

in an outward expression of inner joy, bodies move, blood thick with the vibration of passion and drum skins. For these few moments, there is nothing beyond the circle of fire light. No work to be done, no crops to be harvested, no planting, no herding, no sickness, no hunger. In this moment there is nothing but nostrils filled with smoke and earth, bare-chested men gleaming with perspiration, and singing women kicking up dust with weary feet.

Sweat soaked skin is soon covered with a thin layer of grime. Dust clings turning all the same clay red. as long as the fire burns and the drums sound, colour, gender, social status, family standing, none of it matters because we have gone back to the clay God molded us from.

For these few moments of reckless and wonton abandon, we are as he intended.

yeah i know it's crap, but i thought if i got it down somewhere, i could do something with it later AND i have not made any posts of consequence lately, so i thought that this might make up for it.
