Part three:
History Lesson
Come Into the House
I Know Who You Are
HISTORY LESSON
Narrator:
Several hours later, the sun's out. Outside of the truck, ANDREW hasn't moved. JOHN approaches the truck holding a Slurpee and a pack of yellow Hostess cupcakes. CALEB walks right up to the truck and returns back into the house...
John:
In history class we learned about a standoff.
That all took place in TEXAS, wouldn't you know.
A man named David took a bunch of people in a compound
And told them they would stay there, rain or snow.
And he said he was their saviour.
And he says he [wants to win.]
And there were women crying,
And there were children dieing.
And David said 'wait another day,
Just wait another day...'
Narrator:
CALEB emerges from the house with two bags of garbage.
Caleb:
-Good morning.-
Andrew:
-Whassup?-
Caleb:
-Oh, you know.-
Narrator:
He turns and heads back towards the house.
ANDREW, bewildered, honks the horn of the truck.
John:
-Smooth! I havn't masturbated in two days. Two!-
Narrator:
The action freezes. We see CALEB and ANDREW isolated in light.
Caleb:
What am I supposed to say to you?
Caleb and (Andrew):
(in harmony)Tell me someone, what it is that I should do.
Let the sun look into my eyes and turn me into stone.
Let the sun let me run away and live my life alone.
I've nowhere left to run (I've nowhere left to run)
I don't know what to do (I don't know what to do.)
(unison) I don't know how to say the words I need to say to you.
(harmony) The time is ticking fast.
The sun is rising high.
Won't you just do something, please stop looking in my eyes!
Narrator:
Action restores.
John:
And so they sat there waiting through the daytime.
And then they wait through all the endless nights.
Then after all was said and done
And all the fires had begun
Oh, Mr David, he was nowhere in sight.
Narrator:
ANDREW pulls out a razor and shaving cream and begins to shave.
John:
Now it's me who's stuck inside this compound,
A '97 Chevy painted red.
And now it's hour number nine
and other men have crossed the line.
Looks like someone's gonna end up dead...
End up dead.
-Was it something I said? *pause* DAD!-
Andrew:
-What!-
John:
-Oh my God, where are your balls?!-
Andrew:
-They're here.-
John:
-Good! Shave them next!-
Andrew:
-Did you just call me dad?-
John:
-You... are SO gay! TWO days!-
We've driven all the way here from Ohio.
And we've waited like a [mountain] through the day.
And after all is said and done,
and all the fires were begun
I just wanna run away...
Run away...
Run away...
COME INTO THE HOUSE
Narrator:
JOHN is interrupted by the sound of CALEB's front door opening.
Caleb:
-Andrew, for God's sake, come into the house and do that.-
Narrator:
The sound of JOHN sucking up the last of his Slurpee cuts through the silence.
Caleb:
-You too... That's a horrible breakfast.-
John:
-Cool. Andrew!-
Andrew:
-Right.-
Caleb:
-Right.-
Narrator:
APRIL and CALEB's kitchen, a moment later.
Caleb:
-Hunny, there's someone I want you to meet. Andrew, this is April, my fiancee. Andrew's an old friend from high school.-
Andrew:
-It's nice to meet you.-
BREAKFAST
April:
This is Andrew,
[He's a great person]
Andrew [?]
Andrew, Andrew! It's the mistress.
Watch me vomit, watch me [blush]!
-The pleasure's all mine! Welcome to our home!-
Andrew:
-Thank you. Oh, this is my son, John.-
John:
-Hey!-
April:
-Welcome.-
[?] must be joking!
How could Andrew have a son?
Where'd he steal him?
he's not Asian!
Oh my God, he's on the run!
-I'm sure you both must be starving! Do you want some breakfast?-
John:
-Oh no! We prefer to eat junk food and sleep in trucks.-
April:
-What? You were sleeping out there in that truck? You shoulda knocked! We have a guest bedroom! Eggs?-
I always thought that he would look like Liberace with a turtleneck or one of those cliches.
Instead he comes here looking sad and looking handsome, looking like he hasn't slept in several days.
But he looks like a great man.
One you'd bring home to dad.
Someone who wouldn't turn [?].
I can see why he loves him!
Oh, I would fall for him too.
I want this man out of my house!
Andrew:
-I won't have anything, but John's obnoxiously hungry.-
April:
So there's nothing that you want, you want for nothing.
Well, we both know what you've come this far to steal.
You want my Caleb, you want all I have to live for.
Well, it's not for you. I offer you a meal.
-Come and sit, please!-
Narrator:
ANDREW and JOHN sit at the kitchen table.
April:
[?]
I could've made a [pan] or two.
I could've made a casserole!
-[?]-
I could've made so much.
[?]
[?]
But I have loved this man
And I have held his hand!
Through all the [?] and the [?].
I never thought he'd stay
And still, that was OK.
But now I want to beg him not to go
away....
God, I pray.
Let this wait another day...
Narrator:
CALEB pours some orange juice.
John:
-Oh, he doesn't drink orange juice.-
Caleb:
-He doesn't?-
Andrew:
-No, no, no! I drink it.-
John:
-No, the acid. You said you can't!-
Andrew:
-I can drink it.-
John:
-I hope you got Tums.-
April:
-Oh! We have Tums!-
I saw a note that Caleb sent to Andrew several years ago.
It talked about sex and love and seagulls at the sea.
I didn't know.
He wrote 'come back to me, I need you at my side.'
[I guess these things that Caleb thought] had never died.
But I cried and tried to go to bed.
Narrator:
CALEB goes to the refridgirator and gets out a beer. APRIL brings a plate to JOHN.
Andrew:
-Do you still fish?-
Caleb:
-No, you?-
Andrew:
-No.-
April:
-Honey! Don't drink beer in the daytime!-
[Is there something] to tell me?
In all the years that we spent.
I hoped we'd figure out a plan.
[?]
And normal's the word.
[?]
Why can't this wait until noon?
'Cuz I have loved this man.
And I have held his hand.
Through all the [sleeze] and
[?].
I never thought he'd stay.
And still that was OK.
Now I want to beg him not to go...
away...
God, I pray.
Let this wait another day...
-So, are you here for a visit?-
Andrew:
-Not exactly. [I'm assuming you don't want me here.]-
Caleb:
-Well... it's complicated.-
April:
-Complicated?-
Caleb:
-Maybe you should sit down...-
April:
-OK!-
Oh God, it's time...
It's like a trial sentence.
Will I be ushered to the door?
My score was slightly lower.
I take that and I let you go...
I wish you joy
[?]
I vow to what I don't understand.
I've meant to say I always knew.
It's true I've always loved you,
that was easy.
You have been my [?]...
I KNOW WHO YOU ARE
April:
-Caleb, I know.-
Caleb:
-You... know?-
April:
-I should've seen it coming, him showing up like this...-
Caleb:
-April, you do-...-
April:
-I do! know... Caleb. I know who you are.-
Caleb:
-I have cancer...-
April:
-What?-
Caleb:
-I'm... gonna die. I've been meaning to tell you...-
April:
-That's not your news! That! That is NOT what you have to tell me!-
Narrator:
She runs from the room.
Andrew:
Caleb...
Caleb:
What!
Andrew:
-I got your letter.-
Caleb:
-I'm sorry. I have to go after her.-
Narrator:
CALEB exits.
Andrew:
-He doesn't want me...-
John:
-Well, what did you expect him to do?-
Andrew:
-Well, I don't know! I'm here! I don't know!-
John:
-Oh. I didn't realize we were here to break up a marriage. I knew you still had it in you!-
Narrator:
JOHN runs out. ANDREW looks around the empty room.
