Part five:
When You Fly
Blown Tire
WHEN YOU FLY
Caleb:
Seven more minutes of daylight.
Seven more minutes to kill.
Seven more seasons and seven more reasons to practice standing still.
Heaven is waiting to hold your fingers.
Heaven is just up [the block].
Heaven's still pending, heaven is spending and hour with those you love.
This is what it feels like when you fly.
You break through cloud and catch a glimpse of sky going by.
As you're racing towards the morning, letting go the things undone.
You can almost taste the glory of a newly opened sun.
And you want to start it over,
Rewind, begin again.
But you pause upon a moment
To feel the wind.
Narrator:
The lights start to change. The sky, clouds.
Caleb (overlapping Andrew and April):
Look outside to the left.
Do you see the ocean below?
[Does the altitude climb and the storm ?]
Andrew (overlapping):
Do you see the sky?
April (overlapping):
[I want you to fly.]
Caleb:
We are moving far to slow.
I always dreamt that I'd sail the ocean.
[?]
April:
[Hear me now!]
Andrew and Caleb:
[Now that I'm sailing], no chance of failing.
Caleb:
Nothing that we lack!
Oh! This is what it feels like why you fly!
Andrew and April (overlapping):
This is what it feels like when you fly!
Caleb:
When you break through cloud and catch a glimpse of sky going by.
As you're racing towards the morning letting go the things you've done.
You can almost taste the glory of a newly opened sun.
Caleb and April:
Yes I want to start it over!
Rewind, begin again.
Andrew:
And pause upon a moment.
Caleb:
I feel the wind!
April:
I feel the wind!
Andrew:
I feel the wind!
John:
I feel the wind!
Caleb:
Now is the start of the evening.
See the sky turning pink?
That's you free, what a strange sight to see.
John:
What would my mother think?
Caleb (overlapping):
Now my breath grows shorter.
I feel the wind on my cheek.
April (overlapping):
I feel my breath growing shorter.
Andrew:
[?]
So I'll [stay the sight?]
All:
My fears I would hide,
I will not try to speak!
BLOWN TIRE
Narrator:
Suddenly the car blows a tire and the car swerves off the road.
John:
-Aw shit! FUCK!-
Andrew:
-Oh my God! Caleb, you're bleeding!-
April:
-What?-
John:
-Thanks, dad, I'm fine.-
Narrator:
CALEB notices that his forehead has been cut. He climbs out of the car, APRIL follows him.
April:
-Here! Come here!-
Caleb:
-It's fine. I'm fine. The tire blew.-
Andrew:
-Here. I've got a handkerchief. Hold it up to your head.-
Narrator:
ANDREW holds the handkerchief up to his head.
John:
-Oh it just a tire. We could fix this. You have a spare?-
April:
-Lemme do that.-
Andrew:
-Was I doing it wrong?-
April:
-I beg your pardon?-
Andrew:
-You could ignore me all you want, but I'm here! I care about him just as much as you do!-
April:
-Oh! And you've done such a wonderful job of showing it!-
John:
-You guys wanna get there, or not? I've taken Driver's Ed four times. It's simple, when you get a blow out... -
(April and Andrew continue arguing.)
Andrew:
-What do you mean by that??-
John:
-When you get a blow out and this is a fact. You press firmly on the brake pedal, turning slowly in the direction... -
April:
-Do you see this? I was willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. Don't say you care for him as much as I do!-
(they continue to argue.)
Andrew:
-This man is dieing! Is this all really relevant?-
April:
-I know he's dieing!-
Andrew:
-Oh I don't think you know!-
April:
-You men are the limit! It doesn't matter what I want!-
Andrew:
-Please give me a minute with him! That's all I'm asking! A minute that's his and mine!-
(they continue to argue)
Caleb:
-Hello! Hello! Both of you! There's no spare, ok? I'm gonna go see if there's a gas station down here.-
April:
-You're gonna walk?-
Caleb:
-Yes. Stay with the car. I think I remember there being a town not to far from here. I'll be back as soon as I can.-
April:
-You're just gonna let him go off by himself?-
Andrew:
-Why aren't you stopping him?-
April:
-Go after him! You may as well have your minute.-
Narrator:
ANDREW takes off after CALEB. APRIL walks back to the car where JOHN is sitting. She climbs into the driver's seat.
John:
-Going on THREE days...-
April:
-Two months. They got a night. They don't stop.
Do you have any drugs?-
John:
-Just because I'm a teenager you think I have drugs? I have anti-depressants. Celexa?-
April:
-Never heard of it, what's it do? Anti-depress?-
John:
-You don't have Celexa here?-
April:
-We have first [Corinthians] here.-
Narrator:
Along the roadside, about 100 feet from the truck CALEB walks determined and ANDREW chases after him.
Andrew:
-Caleb! Wait. Wait! I'm coming with you.-
Caleb:
-Don't.-
Andrew:
-Stop! For a second! Look, I'm not very good at this!-
Caleb:
-Well, stick with me because I'm great at this.-
Andrew:
-I'm sorry I...-
Caleb:
-Wait. Stay. Just let me be shitty to you for a while, ok?-
Andrew:
-You didn't tell her anything? You didn't tell her anything..-
Caleb:
- No.-
Andrew:
-Do you love her?-
Caleb:
-More than I love you! Is that what you're after?
Andrew:
- I didn't say that.-
Caleb:
-Don't want you to get jealous...-
Andrew:
-Hey fuck you, ok?-
Caleb:
-Yea. I do... love her...-
Andrew:
-More than me?-
Caleb:
-*laughing* Little shit!-
Andrew:
-Sorry.-
Caleb:
-It's ok.-
Andrew:
-Fuck it! I don't want you to die. I really don't... Please don't!-
Caleb:
-Andrew there's no use in.-
Andrew:
-Yes! Use in this! It's unfair! I mean, I finally got my shit together and I'm finally here!-
Caleb:
-You're finally here! I should've gotten cancer years ago!-
Andrew:
-Hey! Don't make jokes!-
Caleb:
-I will make jokes! You made a joke outta me! Why did you come here?-
Andrew:
-Why did you write me?-
Caleb:
-I always wrote you... Answer me! Why did you come here?-
Andrew:
-To be with you!-
Caleb:
-No! To make me sad! To make me wish that this wasn't happening. How convenient of you! To wait until I've got a few weeks left to decide you're ready to be with me. How convenient!-
