The local Amish farmers may be able to offer a different view on what's "essential" for a farm. :)

Good point. I wonder how the typical Amish farm compares to the industrial-scale operations on the plains, though. Not every farm can be tended by a single family!

I suspect it's a case of apples and oranges. How much of a mega-farm's production goes back to support the mega-operations? How much is really profit? I know that the Amish do well here economically but their lifestyles are pretty modest so their spending is low.

Regardless of modest lifestyles, if you've got 36 square miles of corn to harvest in the space of a few weeks, Pops and a pair of oxen aren't going to cut the mustard. :)
